Lab Technician

Part Time (9.75 hours per week)

Position: The Lab Technician provides technical assistance to science teachers and is guided by policies procedures and practices which require the application of specialized knowledge and training. Duties consist of preparation of chemical solutions assembly of lab equipment and materials proper storage of chemicals and biohazardous materials maintenance and repair of equipment and inventory control. The Lab Technician will work independently exercising judgement and initiative to perform the duties required by a diverse number of laboratory oriented science courses.

Qualifications & Duties:

  • Committed to being a model and witness to Christ-centered education values and beliefs.
  • Apply foundational knowledge about First Nations Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all students and support the Divisions goals towards advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Completion of a two-year diploma in biological science chemistry or equivalent program.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification is required.
  • First Aid training is required.
  • Knowledge of chemical preparation storage handling and disposal procedures.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Prepare labs by using stoichiometric calculations and safe chemical handling procedures; consult textbooks lab procedures and MSDS sheets.
  • Assemble labs with all necessary materials.
  • Review and test experiments as necessary.
  • Supply instructions and containers to classes for chemical waste collection.
  • Retrieve clean dismantle repair and store all lab equipment glassware chemicals live specimens as necessary and according to proper protocol.
  • Follow hazardous waste disposal manuals to treat disposable waste when possible. Safely store untreatable waste until end of year and then plan with a hazardous waste removal company for pickup.
  • Order and receive all equipment or supplies as necessary to conduct the labs; be mindful of budget (through consolation with science head) and track all purchases to submit to the business manager monthly.
  • Contact suppliers regarding price equipment specifications and quality any delayed or short shipments and any items broken during shipping.
  • Make weekly off-site purchases of items needed for the science curriculum such as biological specimens live plants food items and miscellaneous supplies (e.g. batteries matches lighters toothpicks etc).
  • Assist the class with experiments lab demonstrations chemical spills or accidents and first aid as required.
  • Conduct laboratory safety information sessions for students.
  • Field trip supervision as needed.
  • Maintain organized records of lab procedures MSDS documentation purchase receipts equipment warranties manuals and science media collections.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
