Carlow Universitys Department of Art Communications and English seeks a candidate for Assistant Professor of English to assume a faculty role in their undergraduate English program. This is a full-time non-tenure-track position (9 months with summer work available as overload credits) that is located on the Oakland campus in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. This position will begin on August 15 2026. Academic rank is Assistant Professor and starting salary is commensurate with educational and teaching experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Strong candidates will be able to: - Teach four undergraduate courses in the fall and spring semesters (8 courses total per year) including sections of SKW 101 (Foundations of Writing I) and SKW 102 (Foundations of Writing II) along with a combination of literature and writing courses as needed by the department.
- Show developing expertise in English and Postcolonial Literature (possible courses include Shakespeare Modern British Writers and Survey of English Literature) with secondary expertise in Composition or Rhetoric.
- Other possible courses may include Introduction to Literature; Introduction to Writing and Research About Literature (lit theory/criticism); or other literature-survey courses as aligned with the candidates research interests.
- Guide student research projects such as senior theses and supervise student internships.
- Display excellence in teaching across undergraduate programs.
- Facilitate student learning provide effective instruction and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned courses in accordance with FERPA regulations.
- Actively participate in the life of a vibrant department including some evening and weekend events attend conferences and admissions events and contribute to the growth and vision of the department in program and committee meetings.
- Share a deep commitment to effective teaching developing innovative courses and mentoring students.
Preferred candidates will have fluency and/or interest in some of the following areas:
- Universal Design for Learning (UDL); design-thinking; the ethics of AI and AI literacy; professional writing; or multi-modal storytelling strategies
MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL REQUIRED:
- PhD or ABD in English Literature
MINIMUM RELATED EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Ideal candidates will have at least 5 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level with strong record of student evaluations.
