Job Summary

Position Summary

The current opening is in the Parks Division. This position has a focus that includes general turf maintenance sports field maintenance tree and landscape maintenance and general building maintenance.

Under the direction of the divisional Field Supervisors and Lead Workers this position supports the Operations & Maintenance Department and provides for the operation repair and maintenance of the Citys streets parks water sanitary and storm sewer systems and other associated infrastructures. Provides high levels of customer service to both internal and external customers.


NOTES:
  • Brooklyn Park Local 49 members will be given priority placement in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement at five (5) days
  • 2026/2027 wages will be determined as negotiated with the Local 49

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform tree and landscape maintenance to include: pruning removal planting mulching and inspecting
  • Perform turf maintenance to include: mowing trimming irrigation installation & maintenance fertilization herbicide application seeding and aeration in and around parks and recreational facilities
  • Perform athletic field and court maintenance to include: dragging lining painting and chalking dome set up & take down and field layout for various sports
  • Perform snow plowing & ice control primarily in parking lots and trails may also be assigned to street division for snow removal
  • Construct and maintain trails
  • Perform refuse and recycling removal manual and with automated trucks
  • Perform limited plumbing painting carpentry and other general maintenance work on park and recreation buildings and facilities
  • Install and maintain playground equipment
  • Perform outdoor ice rink maintenance including flooding snow removal dasher board repair and goal maintenance
  • Maintenance and animal care at working Historical farm
  • Locate and mark underground utilities; keep records as necessary
  • Collect GIS data for city infrastructure and trees
  • Assist in the maintenance and improvements to the Citys park system to ensure that all parks are well maintained for the safety of the public and protection
  • of City assets
  • Performs emergency hazardous materials response procedures
  • Provides assistance with vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • Provides assistance in emergency or essential operations to all divisions including parks streets and utilities
  • Assist other departments in their service delivery repairs and maintenance
  • Receives and responds to requests and work orders. Follows up on complaints and other matters of public interest related to City infrastructure service and maintenance
  • Deals courteously effectively and tactfully with the public
  • Performs standby duties on scheduled rotation
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education
18 years of age or older

Experience
One (1) year of experience in equipment operation and general equipment maintenance for a maintenance operation

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Class D drivers license at time of hire
  • Class B required within 1 year of hire
  • Class A required within 2 years of hire

Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered

Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to comprehend and execute written and oral instructions
  • Ability to be cross trained in the divisions: Park Maintenance Street Maintenance and Utility Maintenance
  • Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks in one or more of the following divisions: Park Maintenance Street Maintenance and Utility Maintenance
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job including but not limited to lifting bending climbing reaching overhead pushing and pulling
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities in climatic extremes common to Minnesota

Desired Qualifications
  • Valid class B or higher drivers license
  • Two (2) years of experience in equipment operation
  • Two (2) yearsof experience in street maintenance
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a municipal setting
  • Previous experiencesnow plowing streets sidewalks and cul-de-sacs
  • Previous experience working with people from various cultural socioeconomic racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Fluency in Spanish Hmong Russian Somali Lao or Vietnamese language(s)

  • Core business hours are set by departments based on operational needs. Alternative schedules can be arranged but must comply with the Citys Alternative Work Arrangement policy
  • Full-time non-exempt union position; standard work hours are 6:00 a.m. 2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday from November through April; and four (4) ten- (10) hour days from May through October with the possibility of working weekends holidays etc. as needed
  • Ability to successfully complete a physical examination including passing a drug test
  • This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to manipulate handle or feel frequently requires sitting reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing walking climbing or balancing stooping kneeling crouching or crawling pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision distance vision ability to adjust focus depth perception color perception night vision and peripheral vision
  • Visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts
  • Use of measuring devices assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length
  • Ability to operate machines motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts
  • Exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is in a moderately noisy location

Pay Progression
Based on the Local 49 contract with the City of Brooklyn Park with satisfactory performance an employee would receive a 4% increase after 6 months followed by another 4% increase after one year. After year two the employee would receive a 7.5% increase. The current salary range is $31.55 - $40.18 Hourly. Note that wages are based on the 2024/2025 contract.
