Introduction:
The position is administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at Kapiolani Community College (KapCC). The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) is charged with administrative control for planning and administering all programs and services within the Student Affairs units. The specific functions of this organizational unit include outreach and admissions financial aid graduation and transcript evaluations credit and non-credit registration student engagement student counseling for specific and targeted populations student grievances and complaints and related learning support services. This role entails providing essential support to the TRIO Student Support Services Program within the Student Affairs unit.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Fosters self-awareness and personal growth through accessible and student-focused counseling services with a focus on serving high-risk students including students with disabilities low income first-generation in college.
Provides academic transfer career and life planning and personal/social issues and other student support services to improve student engagement learning development retention graduation and success.
Coordinates and provides counseling services in modes to best support student learning (including but not limited to individual and group sessions classroom presentations email phone web etc.); utilize technology to provide student support services.
Empowers students to realize their potentials by facilitating transition and integration to college and bridging to future learning and life/career goals.
Strategically develops implements assesses (through utilizing data and outcomes-based assessment methods) and improves interventions that support student learning development and success.
Handles administrative duties as described in the SSS Project plan including but not limited to staffing the TRIO Student Support Center overseeing and training student employees coordinating the Summer Bridge Program annual performance reporting and complying with reporting requirements.
Facilitates the provision of a wide range of student development services and college persistence and retention initiatives such as first-year experience activities financial aid and scholarship application new student orientation curriculum development and instruction student success workshops career counseling (assessment evaluation and exploration) satisfactory academic progress interventions referrals to on-and off-campus resources exploring of career/employment/continued education opportunities and student success initiatives and services.
Collaborates with faculty and staff from other units to create partnerships for seamless delivery of counseling activities and other support services for Kapiolani Community College students.
Participates in outreach orientation and registration activities. Evening weekend and outreach assignments may be part of the regular workload.
Performs related professional duties including:
Contributes to the growth and development of the counseling discipline and college through committee work grant writing and other college-related activities.
Engages in professional and public service related to ones professional status or expertise.
Engages in ongoing professional development activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance Counseling Psychology College Student Personnel Services Human Resources (to include both CTAHR and Personnel) Communications or related field*;
OR
Bachelors degree in Counseling and Guidance Counseling Psychology College Student Personnel Services; Human Resources (to include both CTAHR and Personnel) Communications or related field*;AND3 years related work experience.
*Note:Related fields include: Education (to include all degrees in this field) Family Resources Human Development Psychology (to include all degree in this field) Public Health Rehabilitation Counseling Social Work Sociology and Student Services Personnel
Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge of college student services (academic career admissions financial aid disability and assessment services) programs
Knowledge of disabilities and academic/counseling strategies appropriate to SSS project participants and related student needs
At least three (3) years of professional experience in developing implementing and evaluating programs appropriate to SSS project participants in post-secondary or community college settings
Demonstrated ability to develop programs and activities to facilitate the retention and transfer of students
At least three (3) years of professional experience in developing and providing retention-oriented services including orientation and teaching college success/leadership courses; experience with implementing peer counseling and tutorial programs
At least three (3) years of professional experience with providing career development services including administration and interpretation of career assessments
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from a wide array of backgrounds and life experiences at an open-door institution (i.e. socioeconomic cultural levels of academic preparedness high school dual enrolled non traditional learners or returning adults career preparation/workforce transition care givers students with learning other disabilities).
At least three (3) years of professional experience working with first generation students.
Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a wide range of counseling functions both independently and as a part of a team
Demonstrated successful and administrative experience with grants
Ability to supervise and train academic support staff (peer mentors and tutors) and manage resources
Excellent communication and organizational skills; demonstrated commitment to working in a team environment continuous improvement and the community college philosophy
Demonstrated ability to initiate implement assess and improve counseling strategies projects and activities to promote student learning retention success and graduation.
Preference for candidates demonstrating a deep understanding (including philosophy and goals) or direct experience with populations served by programs like TRIO.
