The School of Nursing (SON) at the University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Instructor. The responsibilities of this position are in instructional and programmatic activities only with no requirement of a research component.

The UH School of Nursing offers a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) and a doctor of nursing practice (DNP). The program provides a learning environment that is responsive to the needs of a diverse student population and involves a rigorous high-quality education in a caring personalized atmosphere. This educational experience encourages student-faculty interactions and offers hands-on learning and leadership opportunities. The nursing program emphasizes life-long learning and teaches students to deliver culturally congruent nursing care in a rural environment.

  • Teach the equivalent of 12 credits of courses per semester in the undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) RN to BSN and/or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.
  • Teaching duties include in-person classroom lectures in-person clinical practicum and labs and courses delivered by distance education. Faculty are expected to be available to teach in-person on Hawaii Island throughout the week. Instructional days during the week will depend on the courses being taught.
  • Advise students through their degree pathway.
  • Engage in development of outcomes assessment.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and mandatory in-person weekly office hours per university policy.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Masters degree in nursing.
  • Eligible for Hawaii RN licensure and other established professional and health requirements.
  • Acute care experience in medical/surgical obstetrical mental health and/or pediatric health care.
  • Experience in teaching or working with undergraduate clinical nursing students in acute care long term care mental health obstetrics and/or pediatrics settings or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this position.
  • Excellent communication planning and organizational skills.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Doctorate in a nursing-related field.
  • Experience teaching on Hawaii Island with culturally diverse student populations in rural clinical settings.
  • Extensive experience with acute care adult health clinical instruction in BSN nursing programs.
  • Experience with asynchronous education technology and outcomes assessment.
  • Experience coordinating clinical programs in undergraduate baccalaureate nursing programs.
  • Background or experience with simulated learning experiences including the use of high-fidelity patient simulators via detailed clinically-based scenarios with instruction evaluation and remediation in didactic and/or clinical learning settings.
