Job Summary

Summary

Performsstandard laboratory testing for a specialty surgical hospital in order to aidin the treatment of patients and improve patient outcomes. Work is performedwith a considerable degree of independence in the application of clinicallaboratory knowledge and techniques and requires judgments in monitoring testprocedures quality control and test interpretation. Work is performed under the supervision ofthe Laboratory Administrative Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performslaboratory testing with CLIA waived moderate and high complexitydesignations.
  • Showsproficiency in venipuncture and finger sticks.
  • Resultsout laboratory testing in a timely manner.
  • Assistswith interpretation of laboratory results when needed.
  • Assistswith laboratory inventory including ordering of supplies if needed.
  • Rotateson-call every 2-3 weeks as schedule requires.
  • Reportscritical lab values to the appropriate staff in a timely manner.
  • Teachesroutine procedures and orients staff to laboratory services
  • Knowledgeableof criteria of collection and processing of send out labs.
  • Performsproficiency testing monitors records and maintains quality control.
  • Assistswith and reports infection control as needed.
  • Maintainsand calibrates lab equipment; cleans lab according to OSHA and CLIAregulations.
  • Providestest results to requesting clinicians.
  • Abilityto troubleshoot and resolve common issues with laboratory analyzers andequipment.
  • Reportsany complex issues/problems to the laboratory manager/director.
  • Recognizesage specific lab values. Incorporates agespecific parameters into interpretation of lab values.
  • Knowledgeof the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work.
  • Knowledgeof laboratory equipment instrumentation and terminology.
  • Thoroughknowledge of exposure control and universal precautions.
  • WearsPPE as indicated.
  • Knowledgeof the basic physiological processes being monitored and how medical laboratoryscience is applied.
  • Abilityto make accurate observations and written reports of test results.
  • Abilityto understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Abilityto effectively communicate with staff and clients.
  • Otherduties as assigned.

Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification Requirements

(CR.1c) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification at a minimum the Program direct-care staff must have one (1) hour of education specific to the Program scope initially and at least annually thereafter.

(CR.1e) As part of the Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification staff possess adaptability to processes as related to up to date best practices collaboration between departments compliance with protocols/processes communication cooperation and exceptional customer service.

Within 90 days of hire or if currently employed within 90 days of signing the job description must adhere to:

  • Orientation of Advanced Orthopedic and Spine Certification
  • In compliance with the Program education requirements
  • Completed department specific competencies

Regulatory Requirements

  • Must have a current license issued by the stateof Louisiana as a medical technologist medical laboratory technician orequivalent.
  • Must be qualified under general supervisorstandard 493.1461 or 493.1462; (CFR)
  • Must have graduated from an accredited medicallaboratory or clinical laboratory training program with an associateâs orbachelorâs degree.
  • Have at least 1 year of clinical laboratorytraining or experience in high complexity testing;
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively in Englishboth verbally and in writing.
  • Basiccomputer knowledge.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here arerepresentative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully performthe essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this jobthe employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is veryactive and requires some repetitive motion standing walking bendingkneeling and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift or move itemsweighing up to 50 pounds.
