Job Summary

Family School Liaison Worker (FSLW)

(Temporary Position)

The role of the Family School Liaison Worker (FSLW) is to work collaboratively as part of the school-based team to ensure that students social and emotional needs are met within the context of an inclusive educational system. FSLW acts as the connection between families students educators and the community. There are four main elements to the role which include:

  • Facilitate a Relationship Between School and Family
  • Connect with parents/guardians and identify family needs
  • Support parents/guardians in providing a stable and healthy environment for their family
  • Collaborate on attendance concerns
  • Support positive relationships between home and school
  • Connect Families to Outside Agencies and Resources
  • Identify barriers to accessing services
  • Make referrals and assist with navigating systems in the community
  • Advocate for student/family needs within schools and community
  • Provide Individual and Group Support for Students
  • Be a safe person for students to talk to
  • Provide short-term solution-focused counselling to support school success
  • Offer skill-building groups to address student needs
  • Provide classroom intervention/debriefing as needed
  • Act as a Valuable Resource for Students Families and School Staff
  • Be a visible and supportive member of the school community
  • Contribute as a member of the Comprehensive School Health Team
  • Share information on topics such as mental health healthy relationships coping skills emotional regulation trauma-informed practice etc.
  • FSLWs are key members of risk assessment and crisis response teams

Details of Position

  • Full-time position (37.5 hours per week)
  • Working hours: 8am-4pm (with flexibility to work outside these hours as required)
  • Summer off! This position is for the 10 months of the school year with all school holidays off (i.e. Winter break February break and Spring break)

Salary & Benefits

  • Bachelors Degree - $71611 - $82962 (starting place on the grid will be determined by experience)
  • Masters Degree - $74263 - $85827 (starting place on the grid will be determined by experience)
  • Position includes full healthcare benefits including extended health Dental Life & Disability that start upon commencement of employment. Division covers (100%) of the total monthly benefits premium for Alberta School Employees Benefit Plan (ASEBP) and (85%) for dental premiums.
  • Includes a generous Health Spending Account/Health & Wellness Account.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree in Social Work and registered to practice in Alberta
  • Ability to make key judgments and informed decisions for successful outcomes
  • Organization strong teamwork skills the ability to prioritize multiple demands excellent interpersonal skills time management flexibility and initiative
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced school environment
  • Current Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector) & Child Intervention Check
  • ASIST or similar suicide intervention training (current)
  • Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle

Experience

  • Experience working with children and/or youth families and community service providers
  • Previous school-based experience and knowledge of local resources is an asset
  • A strong understanding of counselling theory and ability to design therapeutic interventions based on presenting needs
  • Threat-risk assessment training would be an asset
  • Completion of the Brain Story or other relevant trauma-informed resiliency-based training would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of software applications relevant to the position: google platform MS Office Adobe forms
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Division vision structure policies and procedures
