Job Summary

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic II will provide services and support to the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center contract located at Edwards AFB California and Palmdale California. This role combines advanced automotive repair with administrative responsibilities under the SCA Labor Categories Motor Vehicle Mechanic and General Clerk III.

Key Functions:

  • Diagnose repair rebuild and overhaul major vehicle components including engines transmissions and ignition systems.
  • Apply expertise gained through formal apprenticeship or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as maintaining records verifying reports compiling data and resolving complaints.
  • Exercise judgment in selecting methods and procedures for tasks.
  • Provide guidance to lower-level mechanics as needed (not a supervisory role).

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assign and monitor daily tasks for mechanics and support staff to maintain workflow and productivity.
  • Perform and oversee comprehensive vehicle maintenance and repairs including engine electrical suspension HVAC and computer systems.
  • Enforce garage safety protocols and maintain OSHA compliance.
  • Conduct inspections diagnostics and ensure repairs meet manufacturer and industry standards.
  • Maintain accurate service records and support environmental and regulatory compliance.
  • Mentor junior mechanics and provide technical guidance.
  • Collaborate with management on time estimates and customer satisfaction.
  • Explain technical diagnoses to non-technical individuals clearly.
  • Stay current with evolving automotive technologies through continuous training.
  • Utilize schematics diagnostic tools and specialized equipment for repairs.
  • Coordinate outsourced repairs when necessary.


Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance and/or NASA badge
  • Valid drivers license with a clean driving record; able to operate customer and company vehicles
  • Proficiency with power tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
  • Current federal state and local certifications/licenses as applicable
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical individuals
  • Fluent in English (read write speak comprehend)
  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs and remain on feet for extended periods
  • Willingness to complete required training and certifications

Certifications (Level 2)

  • Minimum of 4 ASE certifications preferred:
    • Engine Repair (A1)
    • Automatic Transmission/Transaxle (A2)
    • Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3)
    • Suspension and Steering (A4)
    • Brakes (A5)
    • Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6)
    • Heating and Air Conditioning (A7)
    • Engine Performance (A8)
  • ASE Master Technician Certification preferred
  • EPA 609 Refrigerant Recovery Certification preferred

Experience

  • 510 years of progressive hands-on automotive repair experience
  • 13 years in a supervisory or lead technician role
  • Experience with diagnostic software/tools (Snap-On Bosch OEM systems)
  • Strong knowledge of modern vehicle systems (electronics drivability emissions)
  • Proven ability to mentor junior mechanics and review repair orders/estimates
