Position Purpose summary:
The role of the Housekeeper/Janitor is to perform cleaning of the Florence Booth House facility to provide a safe and healthy environment for clients and staff. This position requires non-judgemental attitudes towards our shelter users. Florence Booth House supports female identifying clients through a trauma informed and gender specific lens with the acceptance of harm reduction. The ideal candidate will show a level of high resilience related to potential confrontation contact with drug paraphernalia and potentially hazardous situations.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES
- Maintain the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the facility
- Sanitize high touch surfaces regularly
- Perform routine cleaning tasks such as mopping floors cleaning washrooms washing windows dusting vacuuming and disposing of garbage in all office spaces and program rooms.
- Cleaning dining room space sweeping/mopping/cleaning and sanitizing tabletops and counters
- Dry mop all floors as needed
- Clean and dust shelf tops window ledges lower window sections and accessible light fixtures
- Move clean arrange and dust furniture as needed
- Monitor and secure doors and windows to ensure building and resident safety; control access to rooms areas as required
- Report safety hazards and repair needs (e.g. damaged furniture or fixtures) promptly
- Clean and sanitize bathroom areas daily including stalls floors sinks toilets and walls
- Restock washroom supplies and distribute materials as needed
- Spot-clean accessible walls
- Change soiled bedding and linens following hazardous materials protocols as needed
- Sort count and prepare linens/laundry for pickup and confirm the quantity upon return
- Make assigned beds and replace linens as required
- Receive sort and stock donations
- Inspect all beds during cleaning for signs of infestation following proper procedures
- Empty and clean lockers/bins/fridges of discharged clients; record bag and store belongings according to policy
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment following all safety guidelines and using protective equipment
- Complete weekly inspections and promptly report necessary repairs or replacements to the supervisor
- Perform other duties as assigned
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uphold the values and mission of The Salvation Army and Florence Booth House
- Actively participate in staff meetings and training sessions
- Attend formal performance evaluations at the 3-month mark and annually thereafter
- Read understand and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual Employee Handbook and Toronto Shelter Standards
- Become familiar with the Position Description & Operations Manual for the assigned role
- Offer suggestions for improving efficiency working conditions and procedures when appropriate
- Represent the organization professionally and courteously with residents coworkers and external contacts
PHYSICAL EFFORT
- Regular use of industrial cleaning tools and equipment
- Frequent physical activity including bending twisting mopping lifting (over 20 lbs) and standing for long periods
CONCENTRATION REQUIRED
- Moderate to high attention required when operating equipment handling chemicals and performing general cleaning tasks
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
Internal:
- Reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor
- Collaborates with frontline staff case workers chaplain administration and management
External:
- Maintains positive relationships with external agencies for referrals
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY
- Reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor
- No direct supervisory responsibilities
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Frequent interruptions and multitasking
- Exposure to various noise levels aggressive behaviors and stressful situations
- May encounter:
- Angry or verbally abusive individuals
- Bodily fluids odors pests and hazardous materials
- Needles/sharps and drug-related supplies
- Adverse weather conditions
HEALTH & SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Hazards:

- Physical violence or aggression
- Infectious diseases
- Chemical and electrical hazards
- Repetitive strain injuries
Precautions:
- Follow all occupational health and safety protocols
- Use PPE such as gloves eye and ear protection fume masks steel-toe boots and medical-grade masks (as per IPAC)
- Access to eye wash stations and other emergency tools
- Maintain up-to-date immunizations (Hepatitis B TB)
General Safety Responsibilities:
- Report incidents and unsafe conditions promptly
- Conduct safety checks regularly
- Comply with agency health and safety policies
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience & Knowledge:
- 13 years of experience in a shelter or related environment
- Understanding of mental health and addiction issues
- Commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression principles
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient with cleaning practices and chemical safety
- Good physical stamina
- Basic knowledge of building maintenance
- WHMIS certification required
- First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training required
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check
- Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively
