Description:

The Registered Cardiac Sonographer is a trained specialist who is qualified to perform echocardiograms. The primary role of the cardiac sonographer is to obtain high quality recordings of ultrasound images of the heart and related structures for the physicians who will interpret the examination.

What you will need as a Cardiac Sonographer:

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent college preferred.

  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or registry eligible and certified within one year of date of hire OR

  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Two years adult echocardiography experience preferred.

  • Transesophageal echocardiogram stress echo dobutamine stress echo and pediatric experience preferred.

What you will do as a Cardiac Sonographer:

  • Responsible for interpreting the physicians orders and scanning areas of the heart using proper positioning techniques.

  • Selects proper equipment; ie. Transducers and techniques for ultrasound scanning procedures.

  • May be exposed to infectious disease when caring for patients.

  • May be required to work under pressure during a crisis situation.

  • Weekend and holiday rotation required. 24 hour on-call provided. May be required to rotate occasional oncall.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the conduction and performance of echocardiograms on adult and pediatric inpatients and outpatients

  • Adeptly assists the physician with procedures such as but not limited to stat echocardiograms transesophageal dobutamine stress echo and stress echos.

  • Have knowledge of normal anatomy and ultrasound physics so proper display of anatomical structures is identified and recorded.

  • Must be knowledgeable about the operation of equipment necessary to perform accurate testing. Keeps equipment clean.

  • Accountable to report equipment concerns to appropriate resources; is able to trouble shoot basic equipment issues. Request maintenance as necessary for equipment.

  • Transfer patients to the stretcher/bed and position as necessary.

  • Transport necessary equipment to patients bedside when the patients condition does not warrant transfer to the Non-Invasive Lab.

  • Provides physical comfort and emotional support for patients.

  • Completes tech worksheet with all pertinent data calculations and observations recorded.

  • Maintains a daily log of all patients and procedures. Maintains accurate patient files.

  • Orders and maintains an appropriate inventory of supplies for the non-invasive lab.

  • Follows prescribed hospital isolation techniques and Universal precautions.

  • Participates in department meetings in service and QA programs as they relate to non-invasive cardiology.

  • Maintains skills as RDCS with responsibility for obtaining necessary education credits necessary for registry.

  • Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland through performing behaviors consistent with the Trinity Health Values.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal State and Local laws and regulations the Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Program including the Standards of Conduct Code of Ethics as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest ethical and professional behaviors.

  • Supports and conducts ones self in a manner consistent with customer service expectations.

  • Inaccordance with unit or departmental practice determines that appropriate charges have been entered for the correct patient encounter date/time of service with any required modifiers. Make corrections as needed per charge capture policy/practice.

  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management.

  • In accordance with unit or departmental practice assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit. Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed.
