Job Summary

Position Summary:


The Standards team at the Aerospace Industries Association is seeking a driven student to assist with the review and editing of National Aerospace Standards (NAS) documents. A significant portion of the NAS library contains standardized parts and process specifications for components that are used in commercial and military aircraft spacecraft shipbuilding and heavy machinery. The candidate will work with subject matter experts from aerospace manufacturers government liaisons and defense contractors to improve these standards and specifications. Updates to standards will include the addition of sustainable coating alternatives changes to part drawings and the supersession of outdated references among others.


This internship is a unique opportunity that will provide experience in reviewing part standard documents editing engineering drawings and writing technical requirements. Throughout the internship period the candidate will learn the fundamentals of component design and development in a practical environment with support from a dedicated team of engineers and standards experts.


The Standard Engineering Intern supports AIAs National Aerospace Standards Committee (NASC) which is responsible for developing and maintaining industry part standards and process specifications for components and fasteners used in commercial and military aircraft spacecraft shipbuilding and heavy machinery.


This position provides engineering support to the NASC to maintain the NAS collection through a mandatory 5-year review process in close coordination with the Senior Manager Standards Engineering and Senior Manager Standards. The process includes reviewing standards and making a recommendation to the committee to reaffirm revise stabilize or withdraw standards that are up for review.


Key Responsibilities Internship:


  • Review approximately 5-10 standards each month using a set of criteria for the 5-year review and present a recommendation on the status of each standard.
  • Incorporate sustainable plating option(s) into part standards to offer the aerospace and defense industry alternative hardware finishes.
  • Prepare standards for committee vote by updating drawing(s) researching references and writing requirements all while ensuring compliance with the AIA style guide.
  • Collaborate with committee members from across industry and government to resolve comments received on the standards during voting addressing the needs of their company and the industry at large.
  • Maintain and update project information in AIAs tracking database within Smartsheet.


Core Duties and Responsibilities Manager Standard Engineering


AIA has the opportunity to transition this internship into a full-time position as Manager Standards Engineering at the conclusion of the internship if the candidate successfully completes the internship and performs with excellence. The Manager Standards Engineering would be expected to perform the following duties:


Typical Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing approximately 20-25 standards each month using a set of criteria for the 5-year review making a recommendation on each standard to reaffirm revise stabilize or cancel preparing each standard for committee vote and addressing comments received on the standard during voting within AIAs balloting system.
  • Maintaining and updating project information in AIAs Standards Management Portal (SharePoint environment) and tracking database within Smartsheet.
  • Providing guidance to internal and external stakeholders regarding the AIA standards development process and supporting the standards team in growth opportunities for the program.
  • Fielding standards related technical inquiries to AIA in a timely way.

Support of the National Aerospace Standards Program Activities as follows:

  • Attending and supporting NASC meetings 2 times per year.
  • Reporting on the status and health of the NASC 5 Year Review Process to the NASC.
  • Presenting during the Adhoc portion of the meeting to get answers for out of scope comments and how to resolve them ask for project sponsors take actions for helping to solve larger issues.
  • Supporting NASC Steering Committee by conducting engineering research and preparing responses to inquiries from industry in consultation with Steering Committee.
  • Assist Manager Standards on a monthly basis in review of standards before final publication.
  • Develop standard operating procedures and cross-train with other staff members to ensure team resiliency.
Requirements

Qualifications and Experience Internship:


Desired Skills/Experience

  • Experience with AutoCAD (or similar CAD software)
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Demonstrated project management experience preferred

Education

  • Student with Senior level standing
  • Majoring or minoring in Mechanical or Aerospace or related engineering degrees (BSME BSAE)

Special Skills or Requirements

  • Capable of creating and reviewing 2D and 3D CAD drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (with a particular aptitude in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel) AutoCAD LT and SolidWorks.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with audiences across the leadership spectrum.
