ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders & Severe Malnutrition (3M) is the worlds only Center of Excellence for the treatment of patients with extreme medical complications resulting from eating disorders and severe malnutrition. Nurses in the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders play a vital role on the multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive and collaborative care to this patient population.
The ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders is a 30-bed unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5. CNAs and behavioral healthcare techs provide 1:1 care and supervision for every patient. This unique population requires both medical and behavioral interventions.
Job Summary
Under minimal supervision performs in-patient nutrition assessment re-assessment menu management and education while working directly with patients in an inpatient eating disorder unit. Implements Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to optimize patient care and outcomes. As a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team actively participates in patient care rounds. Assists Chief Clinical Dietitian with PI/CQI activities to ensure quality patient care.
Essential Functions:
- Patient care
Performs individual nutrition education according to established standards of care
Proficiently performs assessments for at risk patients and completes within 72 hours of assessed need referral risk notification or MD consult.
Proficiently performs re-assessments for at risk patients and completes according to level of nutrition risk time frames.
Inputs orders for nutrition support as indicated
Provides education with respect to the patient/familys education level optimal learning tool(s)/techniques(s) and readiness to learn.
Provide consults to outside dietitians regarding transfers of patients or complex cases as needed by the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders and Severe Malnutrition
Provide detailed clinical signouts regarding patient care to receiving treatment providers to ensure continuity of care
Assist pt wth one-on-one meal planning and provide nutrition therapy four five days per week
Ensure patients receive exact caloric/nutrient needs that are prescribed by RD seven days a week
Consult on cases regarding involuntary nutrition support
Attend patient/family meetings and participate in co-treatment with team members as needed to ensure all parties involved have a clear understanding of the importance of consistent/appropriate nutrition based off of individualized nutrient needs
Assist patients with weaning off of enteral/parenteral nutrition and introducing/increasing oral nutrition in one-on-one individualized sessions as pt is willing/able
Participates in physician rounds discharge planning and team conferences as a multidisciplinary team member to ensure optimal patient care.
Provides patient education according to policy.
Effectively obtains patient information and handles patient/customer requests and complaints
Documents patient care activities on appropriate forms and according to accepted hospital practice.
Performs intake analysis (calorie counts) as needed.
Covers caseload of other dieticians on the unit when they are on PTO.

Participates in hospital activities to maintain high quality patient care and services.
Effectively uses computer software/programs/electronic medical record to perform diet office functions and clinical activities.
Accurately enters clinical activity data into computer tracking program.
Maintains ongoing professional education through participation in meetings seminars in-services and literature review to enhance nutrition knowledge and professional development and practice.
Attends a minimum of 1 professional meeting and/or seminar per year for each clinical specialty and/or age-specific population of the clinicians area of service.
Serves as a resource provides education assistance and/or training/in-services to departmental staff on information obtained from educational meetings/in-services.
Serves as a resource provides education assistance and/or training/in-services to hospital as assigned.
May be required to help diet techs in kitchen when they are short staffed
(5%) - Quality control and improvement
Participates in quality improvement and/or patient care committee/task force as assigned by supervisor.
Completes quarterly productivity logs.
Performs PI/CQI projects as assigned by supervisor.
Routinely identifies areas makes suggestions to improve service and care.

Education:
- Bachelors Degree Nutrition or related field Required or
- Masters Degree Nutrition or public health or related field
Work Experience:
- less than 1 year Requires dietetic internship Required
Licenses:
- DIETICIAN-Registered Dietitian Certification - CDR - Commission on Dietetic Registration Required and
- CEDSP-Certified Eating Disorder Specialist - IAEDP - International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals Required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to exercise good independent judgment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Process the ability to assess data reflecting the patients status and interpreting appropriate information.
- Demonstrates knowledge of disease specific and age specific nutrition standards of care.
- Demonstrates understanding of Local State Federal and The Joint Commission standards and regulations.
- Demonstrates competency with computer system for order entry and to update diet and patient information.
- Demonstrates understanding of how to use most current version of on-line Nutrition Care Manual.
