Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America serving Cook DuPage Will Lake Kane and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe reliable and efficient commuter service.

This department oversees the design and construction of Metra capital projects and oversees the work of contractors implementing these projects. Capital projects overseen by this group include stations and parking as well as structural electrical and mechanical design.

Reporting to the Director Civil and Structural Design the Senior Structural Engineer / Facilities Design Leadis responsible for managing projects of varying size and as subject-matter-expert in the Facilities Design Lead will oversee the production of design documents for non-station facilities shops yard/administrative facilities towers and crew facilities. The position will ensure compliance with applicable building codes and design criteria established for facilities projects. The position will be responsible for coordination with the Metra stakeholder departments and the primary users of the facilities.

The primary duties include:

  • Draft scope of work and independent cost estimates for complex structural engineering design work to be performed by consultants; review consultant design plans and specifications for compliance with federal state and municipal codes and sound engineering standards; negotiate level of effort; an recommend changes as needed.
  • Manage consultants working on assigned projects including ensuring project schedules and milestones are met evaluating proposed designs for integrity and cost effectiveness and ensuring payment requests are appropriate and reflect completed work.
  • Manage projects including evaluating proposed design changes for integrity and cost effectiveness; and coordinating with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time within budget and compliant with corporate quality standards and Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) guidelines.
  • Maintain detailed records on the project status including schedules costs and design changes; draft memoranda detailing assessments of design reviews and changes needed; and prepare work reports.
  • Collaborate with engineering consultants contractors and other railroads and agencies on related projects and matters.
  • Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment.
  • Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditionsunder prevailing conditions of heat cold rain and otherrelated duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act not the Social Security Administration.

  1. Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering Architectural Engineering or related field with Structural focus from an ABET accredited institution.
  2. In addition to #1 must have six years of Civil or Structural Engineering experience in the design of bridges buildings and related structures.
  3. Considerable understanding of structural engineering design and construction principles.
  4. Considerable understanding of bridge engineering design construction and maintenance principles and practices.
  5. Considerable knowledge of modern construction methods materials and equipment. Considerable knowledge of infrastructure systems.
  6. Considerable understanding of project costing.
  7. Considerable understanding of federal state and local building codes provisions laws and regulations.
  8. Strong analytical organizational and critical thinking skills.
  9. Advanced math skills performing engineering calculations.
  10. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  11. Project management skills.
  12. Skill preparing structural engineering reports.
  13. Proficient in Microsoft Office 365.
  14. Proficient in computer aided design and drafting system applications preferably MicroStation.
  15. Proficient in web-based project management systems.
  16. Ability to manage projects and consultants.
  17. Ability to interpret and apply federal state and local codes and regulations.
  18. Ability to handle multiple tasks establish priorities meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities.
  19. Ability to perform site surveys and assessments.
  20. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Illinois Drivers license.
  21. Must be a Registered Professional Engineer.
  22. Where licensed in another state candidate must obtain Illinois registration within 6 month of hire.
  23. Ability to stand walk and/or sit for extended periods of time.
  24. Hearing/Visual acuity far/near depth perception field of vision color vision.
  25. Ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds.
  26. Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  27. Must be willing to travel within Metras 6-county region.
  28. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning late afternoonevenings or weekends.

Preferred:

  1. Railroad experience.
  2. Certified Bridge Inspector.
  3. Certified in Project Management .
  4. Licensed Professional Engineer.
