The Fleet Management Division is actively seeking (2) Machinist/Fluid Power Mechanics.

This is fleet maintenance support work maintaining and repairing hydraulic and mechanical equipment. Work requires knowledge of techniques methods and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of hydraulic and mechanical equipment which involves the use of specialized skills or specialized equipment acquired through a combination of training and considerable on the job experience. Contacts require courtesy tact and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information ask questions or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by somewhat diversified procedures and precedents but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method technique or procedure to follow. Work involves differing situations requiring use of judgement and search of solutions or new applications. Work is normally performed in a service garage environment where there are some risks and hazards but they are known predictable and mostly controllable. Worker operates automotive and heavy equipment with a gross weight rating of 8000 pounds or more but less than 26000 pounds. Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer hand tools and metal working machines. Physical demands consist mainly of moving from one work location to another sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time; and dependent upon assigned work location may be required to lift or move objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Work is performed under general supervision where work assignments are varied and although subject to practices and procedures the worker is permitted some latitude to set own priorities subject to the superiors approval.
Examples of Work
Maintains and repairs hydraulic and mechanical equipment such as aerial devices cranes bucket trucks digger derricks dump trucks high pressure water pumps air fan vacuum units diaphragm pumps hydraulic boom trash trucks concrete units or hydraulic lift gates.
Maintains and repairs mobile equipment and components such as gear box assemblies winch gear drive assemblies vertical and horizontal milling machines drill presses bolt and pipe threading machine metalizing machine hydraulic hose machine and adjustable reaming machine.
Assembles fluid power components such as pumps cylinders valves reservoirs motors accumulators filters and controls using hand tools and holding devices.
Connects units to test equipment analyzes and records data such as fluid pressure flow measure and power loss due to friction and parts wear.
Recommends modifications in unit and in test procedures instrumentation or set-up based on analysis of test results.
Verifies conformance of parts to specification using measuring instruments.
Analyzes specification of parts and components to be repaired and plans sequence of operation.
Measures and marks dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining.
Road tests vehicles with a gross weight rating of 8000 pounds or more but less than 26000 pounds to determine proper repair completing.
Operates a service truck in responding to service calls.
Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer using word processing spreadsheet database and other related software.
Operates standard tools and equipment such as hand tools saws hoists dynamometers gauges metal working machines including lathes milling machines drill presses and metalizing machines.
Maintains records and prepares reports.
Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonvilles competencies.
Performs related work as required.

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
Two years of education and/or experience in the repair and maintenance of mobile fluid power equipment and/or as a machinist including setting up and operating metal working machines.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
A valid drivers license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
Must qualify for prior to appointment obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The probationary period for this class is six months.
