Description
This is a 10 week paid summer law clerk position for those who will have completed some of their course work from an ABA-accredited law school and thus considered a strong 1L or 2L or recent graduate by the beginning of Summer 2026. This position is supervised by the Deputy City Attorney for the nine-person in-house legal counsel for the City of College Station population approximately 120000. The clerk will have opportunity to work with various attorneys and paralegals in the office depending on the project or work assignment. This is an opportunity to gain insight into public law and what its like to be in-house legal counsel for a public entity.
The City Attorney will sponsorthe hired applicant for theirState Bar of TexasSupervised Practice Card.
Principal Duties
GeneralMunicipalLawPractice.This includes real estate contractsemploymentand other general law areas. Thelawclerk mayassistin title review preparation of deeds and relatedreal estatedocuments organization of documents for varioustransactions proofreadingofcontracts and researchinglegalissues related to these matters.
Prosecution.Thelawclerk mayassisttheCity Attorneys Officein municipal court prosecution of Class C misdemeanors. Work may includepreparation and review of complaintsassistingin processingplea bargains and similar matters and conducting legal research. Criminalcasesprosecuted include traffic lawsCity ordinance violations DOCnoise complaints dangerous dogs and class C assaults.
PublicInformation.Thelawclerk mayassistin compliance withthe Texas Public Information Act including reviewing documents redacting informationrevisingor preparing form responsesandresearching matters related to the requests.
CriminalLaw.Thelawclerk mayassistin researching matters related to the Citys police department including the investigation and prevention ofcriminal activity. This may include researching Fourth Amendment issues criminalprocedureandsimilar issues.
Litigation Management. Thelaw clerk mayassistinmaintaininglitigation filesreviewing strategy pleadings preparation for depositions responding to discovery requests and other litigation matters.
Land Use Law.The City has extensive zoning and land use regulations in place and thelawclerk mayassistin the reviewand tailoring of various forms to specific situations or requests as well as reviewing and studying of maps plats and other land use related items.
Other General MunicipalLaw Matters.Thelawclerkcangain experience with theirlegal writing skills.Unique to cities is thepreparation of localordinanceslegal representation of government officials and how the law affects their conduct such as compliance withTexasOpen Meetings laws. Thelawclerk mayassisttheCity Attorneys Officein itsrepresentation of departments bywithproofingand reviewing policies and operating procedures. TheCityhasnumerouslegal requirements on how toprocurevarious itemsand servicesdepending onthe type of itemor service the monetary amountandthe procurement method chosen or.Thelawclerk mayassistin researchingreviewingand preparingdocuments related toallofthese matters as well as attend meetings related to those matters.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required: Must have completed some law school course work and be considered a 2L or strong 1L from an ABA-accredited law school to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
