Job Summary

Introduction:
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of todays employees began their Scania career with their degree project.

Background:

Modern trucks are evolving into connected digital platforms. Beyond Scanias in-house systems third-party bodybuilders (e.g. crane refrigeration or waste management suppliers) increasingly equip vehicles with their own sensors actuators and control systems.
Today these integrations are typically wired and limited in flexibility making installation maintenance and data exchange more complex.

A wireless local network inside the truck could unlock new possibilities for modularity faster installation reduced cabling costs and seamless data sharing between Scania and third-party components but it must also meet demanding requirements for safety security and robustness.

Objective:

The purpose of this thesis is to explore wireless and local networking solutions for integrating bodybuilder systems with Scanias truck platform from both technical and business perspectives.

The work should result in:

  • An evaluation of suitable wireless technologies that are compatible with cyber security requirements for heavy trucks (e.g. Wi-Fi Bluetooth LE UWB ZigBee or 5G) for local connectivity.
  • Architecture concepts for a secure reliable local network between Scania and third-party devices.
  • A comprehensive business case describing cost-benefit aspects potential new business models and added customer value.
  • Recommendations for implementation strategy and next steps.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Technical Feasibility:
  • Evaluate performance latency and reliability requirements for in-vehicle communication.
  • Assess robustness against interference cyber threats and physical constraints.
  • Business Case Development:
    • Identify stakeholders: Scania bodybuilders and end customers.
    • Quantify potential cost savings (e.g. reduced wiring faster installation).
    • Explore new service opportunities (e.g. data sharing predictive maintenance).
    • Develop financial and strategic scenarios showing ROI and value creation potential.
  • Implementation Strategy:
    • Define possible rollout paths and validation methods.
    • Propose recommendations for integration into Scanias ecosystem.

    Profile:

We are looking for Masters students in:

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Industrial Engineering and Management
    • Mechatronics
    • Embedded Systems
    • Telecommunications

You should have strong interest in wireless communication system integration and business innovation.
Experience in modelling cost analysis or product development is an advantage.

    What Youll Gain:

    • Deep understanding of future connectivity trends in the transport industry.
    • Real-world insight into how technical innovation drives business value.
    • Opportunity to influence Scanias long-term connectivity strategy.
    • Collaboration with experts in vehicle electronics connectivity and business development.
