Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanical Assembly Technician (Levels I-IV) supports the design build and integration of mechanical subsystems for ASIs autonomous vehicle platforms. This hands-on position involves assembling components performing precision fits and collaborating closely with engineering production and quality teams to ensure accurate reliable builds that meet design and performance standards.

Technicians perform assembly inspection and basic troubleshooting of mechanical systems and contribute to continuous improvement efforts in safety efficiency and quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Level I

  • Assemble mechanical components and subassemblies following blueprints diagrams and work instructions.
  • Use hand and power tools for basic fabrication tasks such as drilling bolting and fastening.
  • Perform fit checks and verify clearances and alignments using calipers rulers and tape measures.
  • Conduct visual inspections for workmanship and accuracy.
  • Report discrepancies or non-conformances to the supervisor or quality team.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace adhering to safety and 5S standards.

Level II (includes Level I responsibilities )

  • Perform more complex assemblies and precision alignments with minimal supervision.
  • Read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Perform in-process inspections and record results per quality standards.
  • Support troubleshooting and alignment adjustments on mechanical systems.
  • Suggest improvements to assembly procedures and tools to enhance efficiency.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Level I technicians when needed.

Level III (includes Level I-II responsibilities )

  • Execute advanced mechanical builds and system integrations with minimal oversight.
  • Diagnose and resolve fitment tolerance and alignment issues.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Quality to address design discrepancies or test results.
  • Lead small assembly teams or prototype build efforts when assigned.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining assembly work instructions and documentation.

Level IV (includes Level I-III responsibilities )

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for mechanical assembly and build processes.
  • Lead complex mechanical builds prototype integrations and new product introductions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering Quality and Manufacturing on design-for-assembly (DFA) and process optimization.
  • Develop and refine tooling fixtures and assembly documentation.
  • Train and mentor all technician levels supporting onboarding and skill development.
  • Drive continuous improvement safety initiatives and production efficiency efforts.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION WORK EXPERIENCE AND JOB SKILLS

Level I

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 0-2 years of experience in mechanical assembly or related technical field preferred.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical components and assembly practices.
  • Familiarity with hand and power tools and measurement instruments.
  • Attention to detail teamwork and effective communication skills.

Level II

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience in mechanical assembly preferably in robotics vehicles or automation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical components fasteners and assembly tools.
  • Ability to interpret detailed drawings and perform precision measurement.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and mentoring skills.

Level III

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical certification preferred.
  • 4-6 years of mechanical assembly or equivalent technical experience.
  • Expertise in interpreting complex mechanical documentation and assembly drawings.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and fitment skills.
  • Experience leading teams or mentoring others in a production environment.

Level IV

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher strongly preferred.
  • 6 years of hands-on mechanical assembly experience including leadership in complex builds.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical systems tolerances and production processes.
  • Proven ability to coordinate projects lead process improvements and support cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing 5S and quality management systems preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Regularly required to stand for long periods and work on or around heavy equipment.
  • Frequently required to use hands to handle or feel; must have good dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Occasionally required to sit climb balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl.
  • Must be able to climb on and off large machinery safely.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
