Job Summary

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform scrub duties during procedures while maintaining strict sterile technique.
  • Actively participates in the planning and set up of all supplies needed for the procedure.
  • Hands instruments and supplies to the physician and performs tasks as directed.
  • Assists the procedural team in maintaining patient safety through monitoring sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Properly clean autoclave process and package surgical instruments in compliance with infection control standards and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate autoclave documentation including weekly and monthly maintenance logs.
  • Mentor teach and coach scrub technicians to ensure consistency in practices across all procedure centers.
  • Oversee completion and documentation of scrub technician competencies at hire and annually.
  • Ensure supply rooms are organized inventory is maintained at par levels and supplies are ordered/received accurately.
  • Collaborate with leadership and supply chain staff to ensure cost-effective inventory management.
  • Attend leadership and quality meetings relevant to the scrub technician role.
  • Travel to other centers as needed to provide training and ensure compliance with competencies.

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Surgical Technician training program or two years equivalent experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 35 years of experience as a Scrub Technician preferably in pain spine or surgical procedures.
  • Experience in mentoring training or leading peers preferred.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing autoclave use and infection prevention.
  • Commitment to maintaining compliance with state federal and accreditation standards.
  • Flexibility to travel between procedure center locations as needed.
  • Ability to participate in leadership meetings and quality reviews.
  • BLS certified by the American Heart Association or an AHA accredited program.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of outpatient procedure room policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of patient safety standards per policy.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and sterile technique.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and infection prevention practices.
  • Knowledge of autoclave operation and instrument processing protocols.
  • Knowledge of inventory and supply management best practices.

SKILLS

  • Skill in safety and infection control procedure by appropriately setting up a sterile procedure room and monitoring instrument use.
  • Skill in effective participation on a procedural team
  • Strong skill in organizational and time-management.
  • Proficient with effective communication and teaching skills.
  • Proficiency in documentation and recordkeeping for competencies and autoclave logs.
  • Ability to coach and mentor staff in a professional supportive manner.

ABILITIES

  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and leadership.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to train and develop others to meet competency standards.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems proactively

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Clinical procedure center environment with exposure to biohazardous materials surgical instruments and sterilization equipment.
  • Fast-paced and patient-focused setting.
  • Travel between facilities may be required.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to stand for extended periods during procedures.
  • Ability to lift push and move surgical instruments trays and supplies (up to 50 lbs).
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail in a high-stress environment.
  • Ability to work with focus and composure in urgent or emergent situations.
