Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Charge Nurse is a registered professional nurse who is responsible for assuring effective decision-making and coordination of patient care on an immediate and ongoing basis.
Responsibilities include (but is not limited to):
  • Assesses utilization of staff on a shift by shift basis collaborating with the staffing office and/or House Supervisor to identify staffing needs of the on-coming shift.
  • Communicates with other Charge Nurses of similar units to provide for redistribution of staff during times of increased workload as needed.
  • Assures admission transfer and discharge and/or flow of patients is handled on a timely basis and in an efficient manner.
  • Assures patient care assignments are made according to established criteria policies and proedures.
  • Reviews documentation frequently to promote compliance with standards.
  • Plans and prioritizes indivdualized care based on the assessment utilizing nursing diagnosis including teaching and discharge needs of the patient and family and sets outcome goals in coordination with other disciplines.
  • Coordinates discharge steps or ensures appropriate referral to address timely appropriate discharge needs.
  • Actively participates in staff development activies for team members and precepts new employees and students.
  • Maintains emergency equipment/supplies and safe environment to ensure readiness for urgent and emergent patient needs.
  • Works collaboratively with all health care providers to determine work flow distribution.

Job Requirements

Required:
  • Current California Registered Nursing license
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as an RN in a Labor and Delivery (and the ability to demonstrate accurate interpretation of fetal monitor strips)
  • BLS certification
  • ACLS certification
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification (if applicant does not have must obtain within 90 days of hire/transfer into position)

We prefer candidates with:

Bachelors of Science in Nursing or equivalent

Experience circulating working in the newborn nurser and with post-partum patients
