Job Summary About the Role
Through collaboration with your supervisor and co-workers in this hands-on role you will have the opportunity to lead therestoration efforts to improve the ecological systems within the 500 acres of St. Charles Park District natural areas bydeveloping management and restoration plans. The goal of this position is to increase the overall health of native habitat to create a high-quality amenity for the benefit of residents visitors and the St. Charles community.
Knowledge Skills & Experience
This position is well suited for someone with a friendly and positive personality who is productive and shows initiative is an effective written and oral communicator is reliable and safety-minded.
Required: A Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences Ecology Forestry or Horticulture is required. Four to six years experience is required. Must obtain an Illinois spray applicator license within six months of hire. A valid Illinois State Drivers License is required. Must be Certified Prescribed Burn Manager. Must have plant identification and propagation knowledge and the safe use of power equipment and herbicides. Pleasant personality and work record that shows reliability initiative tact and productivity. Maintain current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification and DCFS Mandated Reporter Certification or obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
Essential Functions of the Position or Role
Park District Cornerstones
- Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park Districts safety and risk management program.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents colleagues the public PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
- Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
- Comply with Park District policies and administrative procedures.
Responsibilities
- Recommend to the Assistant Superintendent of Outdoor Education plans for contracted restoration work ensuring appropriate scheduling and work plans.
- Develop and implement restoration plans involving the removal of non-native species and planting and/or seeding of native species appropriate to the habitat being restored.
- Select acquire and/or propagate and install appropriate native plant material in all restoration areas.
- Develop daily work plans for the natural area restoration crew consistent with restoration goals for natural areas and assign tasks to ensure completion of those plans.
- Plan and lead controlled burns in compliance with permit requirements and best practices.
- Plan and lead the cutting hauling chipping and burning of brush and trees using both hand and power equipment.
- Be attentive to the care and cleaning of all equipment.
- Prepare and apply herbicide as directed and appropriate.
- Manage the collection of seeds and propagation program
- Ensure maintenance of natural area trails and trail structures.
- Supervise assigned employees and train them to become more productive by instruction and hands-on work.
- Operate vehicles and motorized equipment as required.
- Continually upgrade knowledge of all aspects of position.
- Organize and facilitate volunteer workdays and work to retain and grow volunteer efforts.
- Assist at educational programs provide support services for environmental education programs and events.
- Willingly work beyond normal working hours including week evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Administrative
- Keep records of all work performed.
- Keep the Assistant Superintendent of Outdoor Education adequately informed at all times of problems related to work and changes in plans of work.
- Inventory tools and commodities necessary for the operation of the naturalists division of the Parks Department.
Supervisory
- Consult with your immediate supervisor exercise supervisory authority and judgement on an on-going basis related to subordinate employees reporting directly to you in matters including development of job descriptions hiring lay-offs compensating within approved budgeted parameters and disciplinary action up to and including termination in compliance with Park District policies and procedures.
- Exercise independent supervisory authority and judgement on an on-going basis related to subordinate employees reporting directly to you in matters including but not limited to employee training scheduling assigning directing and overseeing completion of work assignments and employee performance evaluation.
Marginal Functions of the Position or Role
- Assist with special events.
- Assist with snow removal.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
