Job Summary:
We have an opportunity for a clinical fellow post in our urology department commencing January 2026 onwards. The level of training available can be tailored from pre-registrar/ST3 to more senior trainee or specialty doctor.
The current work force consists of four Wessex deanery StRs three locally employed middle grades and two senior fellows (endourology and robotic) and 4 FY1s. The department has 13 Urology consultants with interests spanning most subspecialities of urology (core/general endourology/stones BPH uro-oncology robotics and general paediatric urology). There is a large team of oncology nurse specialists benign nurse specialists and a stone team nurse practitioner. We run a Consultant of the Week on call system which provides excellent support for emergency work. Queen Alexandra Hospital is designated cancer centre tertiary regional renal centre and supported by 24 hour interventional radiology cover.
The post would suit candidates who have completed basic/core surgical training and who wish to pursue a career in urology (with a view to applying for NTN training) but could potentially be tailored to a more senior candidate for subspecialty experience. The successful candidate would take part in the 1:9 middle grade on call rota which is currently a 24 hour on call system (nights being non-resident). The duties of the successful candidate would include undertaking the daily ward round with direct consultant supervision (when on call or on ward cover) supervised clinics endoscopy and theatre sessions with consultant supervision/training. There are also opportunities for independent lists and clinics where appropriate. Participation in audit research and education (teaching medical students and formal teaching of foundation doctors) is strongly encouraged and supported.
At the more junior level we can offer a wide variety of core/general urology and opportunities to learn/ gain confidence in diagnostic procedures such as transperineal prostate biopsies (including local anaesthetic and GA formal fusion biopsies) flexible cystoscopy including laser treatment of bladder tumours and urodynamics whilst gaining good exposure to a wide variety of emergency addition time will be spent in theatre developing expertise in core urology procedures (including cystoscopy TURBT TURP and ureteroscopy) and if desired bedside assisting for gaining early exposure to robotic surgery early in your career.
There will also be opportunities to gain exposure to subspecialty procedures; including laparoscopic nephrectomy and pyeloplasty LDR Prostate brachytherapy robotic prostatectomy robotic cystectomy robotic partial nephrectomy robotic nephro-ureterectomy and robotic ureteric implantation as well as multi-disciplinary work with gynaecology (including a tertiary endometriosis unit). We have a high volume of complex stone work including flexible ureterorenoscopy PCNL and newly installed onsite lithotripter. For BPH we have the highest daycase rate for bipolar TURP in the country provide a HoLEP service and recently introduced PAE via the interventional radiology service.
The ability to communicate and work effectively and flexibly as part of a multi-disciplinary team is vital.

- Liaise between nurses junior doctors patients relatives and senior medical staff
- Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled
- Take part in rostered out of normal hours emergency work
- Maintain continued professional development
- Attend educational and multidisciplinary sessions
- Undertake audit
- Teach medical students
- Co-operate with members of the personnel department when monitoring hours of work and other personnel issues.

- Comply with all local policies including dress code annual and study leave
