Job Summary

Working under the director of the Registered Nurse the OB Tech assists in patient care activities maintains department stock and performs technical duties in accordance with policy and procedures. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Sets up delivery table in preparation for vaginal delivery. Identifies patient needs/ physician preference for supplies equipment instruments. Maintains principles of aseptic technique. Sets up table in a timely manner
Disassembles table washes and bags or disposes of instruments following delivery as necessary. Maintains infection control standards.
Assists in preparation of nursing unit patient rooms and beds. Prepares the nursing unit to receive patients using the established department procedure. Checks patient room to ensure that all supplies and equipment necessary for admission are present.
Inventories and stocks department supplies and equipment including adequate quantity of forms. Orders supplies and equipment as approved by OB Director. Uses appropriate ordering process.
Reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate department. Completes and submits appropriate form. Maintains log of equipment sent out for repair.
Assists with capturing of supply nursing and pharmacy charges. Ensures that charge sheets are completed and submitted to the appropriate department for each patient. Reviews any charges in question with the nursing staff.
Notifies departments appropriate for task to be done.
Accurately transcribes physicians orders. Completes necessary forms requisitions and communications necessary to implement orders. Always has RN check information before implementing any orders.
Maintains unit records ensuring accuracy at all times. Maintains and updates patient census and acuity list including all admissions and discharges. Maintains and updates patient board identifying physicians on call and occupied patient rooms.
Answers birthing center telephones. Receives places and transfers calls using appropriate telephone etiquette handles calls with courtesy accuracy and respects confidentiality. Contacts appropriate physicians by telephone pager or over-head paging system as directed by licensed staff. Is consistently accurate when utilizing physician on call schedule.
Maintains the patients clinical record as prescribed by Hospital and Birthing Center.
Performs hearing screening for newborn infants. Familiar with use of equipment. Able to troubleshoot common issues with equipment. Records results per protocol. Notifies biomed as needed to maintain equipment.
Consistently demonstrates a positive approach and cooperative working relationship with patients physicians and staff.
Attends Staff Meetings and In-service education programs. Attends department meetings. Attends in house education programs.
Performs limited nursing care under supervision of licensed staff. Takes and records vital signs height weight intake/output and other measurements applicable in an accurate and precise manner. Reports all variations from normal to RN on duty.
Ensures staff compliance with policies and procedures regarding department and hospital operations including fire safety and infection control.
Maintains regulatory requirements including all state federal and TJC regulations related to the Department and as appropriate the hospital

Required Skills/Abilities

BLS Certification within 6 months of employment
Knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to write legibly spell correctly and perform basic math.
Basic computer knowledge.
Multiline phone operation
Strong emphasis on customer service skills
Demonstrates professional conduct at all times.
Excellent communication skills

Education & Experience

High School Graduate or equivalent
Six months experience in patient care in an acute facility preferred.

Job Type: Full-Time Variable Shift

Pay: $26.00 to $28.00 hourly
