The Department of Natural Sciences at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) invites applications for a full-time Instructional Assistant Professor position in Organic Chemistry with the appointment to begin no later than Fall 2026. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate chemistry courses including lecture and laboratory components a commitment to student-centered teaching and the use of evidence-based instructional practices in the STEM fields experience with undergraduate mentorship and evidence of service at their institutions.

Chemistry is the newest degree program in the Department of Natural Sciences and offers three undergraduate degrees: a BS a BA and a BS with teacher certification in Chemistry. As an instructional faculty member of the Chemistry program at a rapidly growing aspirational university faculty are expected to actively engage in chemistry curriculum development building the chemistry program in a way that leads to ACS accreditation student success initiatives and recruitment activities. Teaching responsibilities will include lecture and laboratory instruction in organic chemistry as well as entry-level chemistry courses. Enhancing student success in these foundational courses is a high priority for the university. The current teaching load for instructional faculty with service obligations is 4/4. Faculty are expected to contribute service to the department college university community and profession.

The Department of Natural Sciences aims to provide the best possible educational experiences in the fields of Biology Chemistry and Water Resources Sciences & Technology (WATER). Our undergraduate degree programs prepare students for entry into the workforce graduate or professional programs. Responsibilities:

  • Teach the equivalent of 24 course credits per academic year (4/4 teaching load) in Chemistry courses including Organic Chemistry I & II and General Chemistry I & II.

  • As part of the newest program in the Natural Sciences Department service related to enhancing the Chemistry program is a top priority.

  • Service at the department college university community and professional levels is also expected.

Required Education and Experience:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemistry with a specialization in organic chemistry from an accredited university at the time of appointment.

  • Experience teaching introductory/general chemistry organic chemistry or other foundational chemistry courses.

  • Evidence of developing and implementing innovative pedagogical approaches to teaching in the STEM fields.

  • Excellent skills in interaction and communication with students faculty and staff.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Prior experience mentoring or advising students particularly in STEM fields.

  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g. Canvas Blackboard D2L) and other instructional technologies.

  • Experience in both lecture and laboratory course and curriculum development.

  • Demonstrated commitment to departmental service and student engagement.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to complete tasks and work cooperatively with others.

  • Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty staff and students.
