Important note: Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Introduction:
Works with the Board of Student Publications a Chartered Student Organization to oversee the publication and sustained maintenance of student journalism on campus. This position requires experience with training mentoring and managing student employees and their journalism skills. As the advisor of student journalism on campus this position also oversees the content budget hiring of student editors and attend meetings with the Board of Student Publications. Experience with social media and printing services is required as well.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • ServeasliaisontotheBoardofStudentPublications(BOSP)andstaffandkeeptheBoard informed about the progress successes and/or issues regarding publications or Kapio Newsevents.
  • Approve the publication and ensures that it is acceptable for viewing/reading by the campuscommunity.
  • Submit a proposal to the Board for the next fiscal year about how the publication fulfills the BOSP mission a budget request a clear plan of action with a timetable for the publication and an approximation of advisor time/involvement.
  • Ensurethatthepublicationiscompletedinatimelyfashion.
  • Reviewandsubmitnamesofeditors(studentpaidposition).
  • Supervisestudenteditorsastheyproducereviseandeditthepublications.
  • Trainmembersoftheeditorialstaff.
  • Maintainprintanddigitalarchivesofnewspapersandjournals.
  • Createadvertisementsforsubmissions.
  • Submitareport after publication by the end of the spring semester which includes the following:
    • Alistoftheeditorialstaff;
    • Publicityrecruitmentandsubmissioninformation;
    • Proceduresformaterialselection;
    • Productionprocedures;
    • Anaccountingofexpenditures;
    • Anyothersourcesoffunding;
    • AnAdvisorevaluationoftheworkcompletedthatfollowsBOSPguidelines;
    • Any other material that may be helpful to a new advisor

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in journalism communications media studies or a related field.
  • Considerableworkingknowledgeofjournalisticethicsstandardsandpractices.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials
  • Stronginterpersonalandmentoringskillstoguideandsupportstudentjournalists.
  • Demonstratedabilitytomanagemultipleprojectsanddeadlineseffectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving media landscapes and digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with digital media tools content management systems and social media platforms.
  • Ability to understand sensitivity to issues of diversity equity and inclusion in media.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead subordinates and manage work priorities and projects.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • At least 2 to 4 years of professional experience in journalism media or a closely related field; especially as an editor writer or contributor for reputable publications.
  • PhD degree in journalism communications media studies or a related field.
  • Atleast2yearsofprofessionalexperienceinadvisingteachingormentoringcollege-level studentjournalists.
  • Existing connections within the journalism industry media organizations or related fields.
  • Experienceleadingormanagingateamofjournalistsormediaprofessionals.
  • Demonstratedknowledgeofdata-drivenjournalismtechniquesandtools.
  • Demonstrated familiarity withmultimediastorytellingpodcastingvideoproductionand interactivedigitalcontent.
  • Experience in fostering relationships betweenstudentjournalistsandthecommunitythey serve.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in handling conflicts and ethical dilemmas that may arise in student journalism.
