Job Summary

Introduction

This is a statewide position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Natural Resources Police. This is a statewide position applicants selected for this position must be willing to be stationed anywhere in the State of Maryland. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Selected candidate will report to the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions located at 6852 4th Street Sykesville MD 21784 for training.

Upon graduation once selected candidates become sworn law enforcement locations would be assigned by NRP leadership based on current vacancies and the immediate needs of the department.

Main Purpose of Job

Natural Resources Police Officer Candidate is the entry level of law enforcement work in the Department of Natural Resources. Employees in this class attend the Natural Resources Police Training Academy to learn how to enforce State and Federal Laws and departmental rules and regulations as they apply to conservation boating hunting DNR-managed lands criminal civil and traffic violations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: None.

Note: The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland Public Safety Article Section 3-207.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification must attend the law enforcement academy and pass the Entrance Level Police Training Course required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission and the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

2. Employees in this classification will be assigned training duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle and will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland Public Safety Article Section 3-207. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship
Must be at least 21 years of age
A completed background investigation including a check of criminal history
Oral interview and truth verification device testing
Physical and psychological examination following offer of employment.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09 Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

4. Natural Resources Police employees serve a two-year probation period beginning with entry on duty in this classification.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants will complete a written test designed to measure abilities and personal characteristics of importance to the role of a police officer. Once all qualified applicants have been identified they will be informed about the availability of testing. Following the establishment of the testing date candidates will receive the necessary preparation materials. They will be allotted a period of four (4) weeks to effectively utilize these materials in preparation for the written assessment.

Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation which will include:

truth verification device testing (polygraph)
drug screening
oral interview

Applicants who successfully complete the background investigation will be required to successfully complete a medical examination and a psychological examination.

This is a skilled service classification in the State Personnel and Management System.

EXAMINATION PROCESS
