Job Summary

Problem definition:

The Dutch Distribution System Operator Liander is working to optimize the capacity of existing grid components in order to accommodate increasing demand and the integration of renewable energy sources. Thermal models have been developed for several major component types to assess static cyclic and dynamic ratings. For cable systems modelling has primarily concentrated on the thermal behaviour the cables themselves. However models for joints and terminations have not yet been created although these elements are essential to the overall reliability and function of the whole cable system. Accessories are more susceptible to spontaneous failures due to their vulnerability to defects which introduces uncertainty regarding their optimal ampacity.

Methodology:

The student will develop a time-dependent FEM (COMSOL) model for MV cable accessories comparing thermal models with grid measurements. They will also analyse asset populations failure modes and grid setups to identify sub-populations at risk from higher loads.

Research Objectives:

  • Literature study on the thermal modelling of cable accessories and their failure modes.

  • Thermal modelling (FEM) of cable accessories incorporating boundary conditions for underground and above-ground environments

  • Thermal bottleneck analysis on various cable system configurations and environments.

  • Impact and risk assessment of joints and terminations at increased loads.
