The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU) as part of a global consortium led by Partners in Health and in collaboration with the Department of Health has embarked on the ARC-TB PROJECT. This project is designed to improve the cascade of care for multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant TB patients. Through this study we will implement a model of household contact management to screen and evaluate close contacts of DR-TB patients in the community and ensure linkage to care.



The primary objective of this role is to provide technical expertise in public health and data science to the Provincial Health Data Centre assisting in the design development and implementation of digital tools and actionable reports that support the implementation of community-based DR-TB household contact management.



This role involves providing technical support in collaboration with other domain experts in all stages of the health data lifecycle such as data take-on transformation modelling analysis reporting visualisation and data governance.



This role is ideal for an individual who is a problem-solver at heart and can convert intricate data into smart solutions aimed at improving health outcomes.

Duties/Pligte

  • Utilising domain expertise analytical skills and software knowledge to support the development and maintenance of data take-on processes and curating routine health data.
  • Being actively involved in data beneficiation interpretation inference analysis and reporting.
  • Developing algorithms and tools to support the implementation of community-based DR-TB household contact management.
  • Processing and delivering reports actionable line lists monitoring and evaluation tools against data requests of varying complexity.
  • Providing supervision to junior data personnel as needed.
  • Developing and implementing training programmes user guides and other products that promote understanding of the Provincial Health Data Centre patient management digital tools.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Masters or PhD in one of the following fields: Computer Science Information Systems Applied Mathematics Statistics Demography Biostatistics Epidemiology.
  • At least five (5) years experience in enterprise cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS.




Required Experience:

A minimum of five years experience in the following:

  • Health information systems and health data interoperability.
  • Experience and proficiency in SQL DataBricks and PySpark.
  • Working with large disparate sets of data (hundreds of millions of records).
  • Statistical expertise and broader software programming experience.
  • Working with stored procedures and views.
  • Working with a scripting language e.g. Python R.
  • Technical communication and presentation of ideas.


Required Key Competencies:
  • Competence in working in an ever-changing environment and modifying plans accordingly.
  • Advanced knowledge of and proficiency with cloud technology including Azure SQL and interactive data visualisation software such as PowerBI.
  • The ability to design databases and build new ETL processes.
  • Analytic skills to conceptualise and execute data extraction and analysis tasks.
  • The ability to conceptualise design and implement efficient actionable data-driven reports.
  • Demonstrable strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively create edit and review relevant reports and presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
