Main Purpose of Job
TheDirector of Science provides leadership content area expertise and oversightto all statewide science programs and initiatives prekindergarten through 12thgrade in Maryland public schools. This position oversees the development anddeployment of best in class research-based support to local education agenciesand early childhood education providers to implement comprehensive andequitable policies programs and practices aligned to Marylands sciencecontent standards. The director of science will focus on developing andimplementing programs and initiatives that ensure access to secondary sciencecourses and pathways that are intentionally designed to prepare students to becollege and career ready especially those who have been historically underserved.
Thedirector of science will spearhead the Maryland State Department of Educationscollaboration and coordination with key stakeholders (i.e. institutions ofhigher education associations nonprofits; community-based organizations;nationally based organizations industry; etc.) in the implementation ofhigh-quality science curriculum courses and programs aligned to Marylandscollege and career readiness standards. This position will oversee thecollaboration with diverse communities and organizations to analyze programsand strategies that promote culturally responsive teaching practices and bestin class research-based college and career readiness pathways such as dualenrollment early/middle college advanced placement International Baccalaureateindustry-recognized credentials and apprenticeships. This position supportsthe Maryland State Department of Educations efforts in implementing themultiyear strategic plan and the Blueprint for Marylands Future.
POSITION DUTIES
Providesdirect content specific leadership and oversight to statewide science programsand initiatives.
- Provides leadership for science curricular design instructional implementation assessment and professional development in prekindergarten through 12th grade.
- Identifies gaps and barriers in access for historically disadvantaged students to advanced science courses pathways and programs develops and implements solutions.
- Spearheads and coordinates regular statewide content meetings and conducts local education agencies site visits.
- Provides high-quality technical assistance and professional learning sessions to local education agencies and early childhood education providers to build capacity for delivering highly effective teaching.
- Provides content expertise and leadership in the development and application of state rubrics for ensuring high-quality instructional materials in science aligned to the Blueprints college and career readiness standards.
- Collaborates with MSDE workgroups to design and implement high-quality science curriculum courses pathways and assessments aligned to the Blueprint for Marylands Future.
- Manages the development and coordination of college and career readiness pathways to ensure equitable access for historically disadvantaged students.
- Demonstrates highly effective and collaborative relationships with divisions and offices to implement MSDEs multiyear strategic plan and the Blueprint for Marylands Future.
- Manages statewide workgroups with key stakeholders focused on strengthening existing and building new science courses and pathways aligned to the Blueprint for Marylands Future.
- Designs implements and evaluates high-quality professional learning activities for a variety of audiences.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:ABachelors Degree in Science or STEM or a related area from an accreditedcollege or university.
Experience:Five (5) years ofexperience in managing and leading Science Environmental and/or STEM programsoradministering educational science related programs in prekindergarten through 12settings. Oneyear of this experience must include supervising and/or coaching professionaleducation staff.
Notes:
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a Masters degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate course work in mathematics STEM education or a related area for two years of the required experience directly related to the position.
- The required field of education and experience are unique for this posting and are established by MSDE in accordance with Education Article Section 2-104 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The specific education and experience qualifications for each position are on record in the Office of Human Resources.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education one year of which must have been in an administrative supervisory or consultative capacity.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Possess at least one year of experienceproviding technical assistance support coordination or administration of Scienceand/or Environmental Sciences programs.
