Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870 when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the persons individual needs recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication evidence-based group and individual therapy peer support psychosocial rehabilitation vocational training preparation for court and treatment for substance use.

Central State Hospital is recruiting for a Crisis Prevention and Response Team Officer! This vital role is responsible for maintaining a safe therapeutic and supportive environment for patients staff and visitors through active engagement early intervention and crisis management. The Crisis Prevention and Response Team Officer remains visible and engaged on the units building professional supportive relationships with patients while monitoring and influencing the environment to reduce agitation and promote healing. Responsibilities include conducting safety rounds responding promptly to emergency codes using de-escalation and therapeutic techniques to manage behavioral crises and assisting with physical interventions when necessaryalways following least-restrictive and person-centered care principles. The officer collaborates closely with nursing and treatment teams provides leadership during crisis situations models professionalism and effective communication and ensures all incidents are reported accurately and timely. This position requires reliability sound judgment and a commitment to fostering a safe respectful and recovery-oriented hospital environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities to Successfully Perform the Job:

- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively.
- Basic computer skills for communication clinical and administrative tasks.
- Ability to work various shifts including weekends and holidays and handle overtime as needed.
- Capable of safely de-escalating situations and engaging in physical restraint techniques as trained and necessary during emergencies.
- Ability to remain calm and act quickly during emergencies.
- Ability to maintain constant vigilance through patrols and interact with patients to provide early intervention and support.
- Manual dexterity standing walking and lifting are a routine part of work.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:
- Valid Virginia Drivers License (Required)
- Experience working in a mental health setting and/or correctional/security

Additional Considerations

Preferred:
- Prior experience in law enforcement military corrections or behavioral health
