Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for a Recreation Supervisor who will is responsible for the comprehensive oversight management and development of all recreational programming and staff within the juvenile correctional facility. Ensures the delivery of safe structured and therapeutically beneficial recreational activities for incarcerated youth aligning with the facilitys rehabilitative mission security protocols and all relevant standards.

Work schedule is Monday through Friday 11 AM - 8 PM one Saturday per month 8 AM - 5 PM

Core Responsibilities: (Not limited to)

  • Recreation Supervisor - Expectations are clear well communicated and relate to the mission vision and goals of the department; staff receive constructive informal and formal documented feedback in a timely manner; requirements of performance planning and evaluation are met within established deadlines and with proper documentation; and employee development is encouraged and fostered.
  • Administrative Duties-Capital Resource - Oversee the procurement process for recreational equipment and supplies ensuring compliance with state purchasing regulations and facility budgeting guidelines. Implement and manage an effective inventory control system for all recreation equipment and materials ensuring accountability and preventing misuse.
    Implements PBIS Behavior Management Program - Gives feedback to youth as they work towards meeting PBIS expectation. Provides PBIS points as prescribed to youth within the facility-wide PBIS framework.
  • General Juvenile Record/BADGE Duties -Review Account Information access permissions within BADGE and any other data systems/files for each employee at least annually and adjust as needed to eliminate unnecessary access to confidential juvenile information.
  • Recreation Program Oversight & Development -Direct the planning scheduling and implementation of diverse recreational activities (e.g. sports arts educational games wellness initiatives) that are age-appropriate developmentally sensitive and contribute to positive youth behavior and skill development. Review and approve recreation activity plans ensuring adherence to facility policies safety protocols and therapeutic goals. Monitor program effectiveness and adapt offerings based on youth needs participation and behavioral outcomes. Ensure recreational programming reinforces the facilitys behavior management program components.
  • Staff Supervision & Development - Provide direct supervision guidance and mentorship to Recreation Specialists fostering their professional growth and ensuring high-quality program delivery. Conduct regular performance evaluations identify training needs and facilitate professional development opportunities for the team.
  • Coordination & Collaboration - Establish and maintain effective working relationships with facility management security staff case management behavioral services and other departments to integrate recreation into the youths overall treatment and daily schedule

Essential Skills: (Not limited to)

  • Directing the planning scheduling and implementation of recreation activities ensuring they are safe therapeutic and align with facility goals and behavior management.
  • Leading coaching evaluating and developing Recreation Specialists managing their schedules and addressing performance issues.
  • Overseeing procurement and inventory of recreation equipment and supplies ensuring safety cleanliness and adherence to budget and regulations.
  • Building relationships and coordinating with other facility departments (security case management education behavioral services) to integrate recreation into youth treatment plans.
  • Managing departmental administration efficiently maintaining records preparing reports and utilizing computer software for various tasks.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear reports give instructions and present information effectively.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff youth vendors and management.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments prioritize activities and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Skilled in the use of standard office computer software programs.
  • Working knowledge of adolescent physical emotional and social development and the impact of incarceration on youth behavior.
  • Working knowledge of institutional procedures security protocols and coordination with other operational units in a correctional environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience supervising coaching or mentoring a team
  • Comprehensive knowledge of recreation program planning coordination and implementation
  • Experience analyzing youth behaviors in a group setting or correctional facility
  • Considerable knowledge of applying principles of behavior management and positive reinforcement
  • Experience with procurement processes and/or inventory control

Additional Considerations

  • Progressive experience in planning and leading recreational activities for youth in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in a correctional residential or secure facility is highly preferred.
  • Current certification in First Aid and CPR or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe
