Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History

The Harris County Public Library (HCPL) system established in 1921 began as a collection of small libraries located in stores post offices and private homes. Over the years it has grown into a robust network comprising 26 branch libraries two technology service centers and two partner locations that provide collection and circulation services. HCPL serves the communities of unincorporated Harris County and cities without independent library systems.

In 2024 HCPL received the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service the highest honor awarded to libraries in the United States. Bestowed annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) this award recognizes institutions that deliver exceptional service to their communities. What you will do at Harris County Public Library:

Responsible for a wide array of tasks designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable library experience for patrons. Duties include patron assistance engaging in activities and program delivery outreach and maintenance of library materials. Delivers comprehensive customer service actively connects patrons with the information they need and efficiently handlescirculation tasks. Support innovative library programs demonstrating a thorough understanding of all library operations and consistently delivering an exceptional customer service experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the first point of contact for library customer service assistance and information related to library services fees procedures city information directions or other issues

  • Accurately enter retrieve review or modify data; handle sensitive customer information; provide Voter Registration assistance; and handle cash transactions

  • Answers incoming telephone calls and responds to patron emails

  • Promote library services in the library during outreach events and to the community

  • Assist patrons with requests for assistance computers and the use of the copy machine; Maintain an adequate supply of copy paper in paper trays

  • Maintains customers accounts using the integrated library system software in the library and during outreach events utilizing databases or other software programs

  • Handles the checking-in and delivery process for new reserved returned and incoming items

  • Pulls expired holds routes books to other locations when necessary runs reports and inspects materials for damage withdraws items in need of repair from circulation and actively searches for lost items on the shelves.

  • Shelves library materials sorts and arranges items on book carts for shelving retrieves misshelved and displaced items locates specific items within library collections conducts routine shelf readings and consistently maintains the order of materials on shelves

  • Performs general tasks related to library operations which may include recording door statistics relocating book carts turning equipment on and off checking patrons items when alarms sound and maintaining the overall cleanliness and appearance of the library

  • Participates in the preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits

  • Maintains and assembles outreach promotional materials including bookmarks brochures bulletins forms giveaways and procedural books

  • Maintains supplies for assigned area: monitors inventory levels of library supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials-

  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings library events and training sessions to improve skills and gain professional knowledge

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency
Experience:
  • One (1) year of verifiable Customer Service experience

Additional Information:
  • Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties
  • Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED) must be readily available upon request


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Customer service principles promoting positive partnership and public relations

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word Excel PowerPoint Outlook)

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment

  • Ability to work well with public and staff members

  • Cash handling practices ensuring accountability and accuracy

  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a discreet and effective manner

  • Proficient with Social Media (Facebook Twitter Instagram etc.)

  • Proficient with the Internet and Office 365

  • This job typically operates in a professional office environment.

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • At times work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.

  • There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.

Physical Demands:
  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking standing stooping bending reaching lifting and carrying.Ability to lift carry and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts carries and exerts up to 40 pounds.
