Other Conditions: Appointment to begin on August 1 2026 subject to position clearance and availability of funds. This position may be appointed as Program Director for the baccalaureate HIM program to lead CAHIIM accreditation and ongoing compliance.
The University of HawaiiWest Oahu (UHWO) a public primarily undergraduate institution with a strong commitment to teaching excellence and Native Hawaiian-serving mission invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Health Information Management (HIM). The successful candidate will provide vision and academic leadership to ensure a vibrant and growing HIM program that supports workforce needs for the health care community; seek and obtain the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) accreditation for the baccalaureate HIM degree including all necessary assessments self-study and site-visit preparations to support the accreditation process; oversee the hiring and onboarding of lecturers; design and implement program curricula course schedules and transfer pathways; establish PPE (professional practice experience) partnerships facilitate an advisory board and establish practices for continuous program improvement.
Program Director (PD) eligibility and CAHIIM leadership: Appointment as PD requires RHIA and at least a masters degree and will include documented release time during candidacy/self-study/site-visit periods and 1 -2 summer months of administrative assignment to ensure year-round leadership. The PD role counts towards CAHIIMs requirement for two full-time HIM faculty.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide program vision and academic leadership to ensure a vibrant growing HIM program aligned with healthcare and workforce needs.
- Teach and develop undergraduate HIM courses in traditional hybrid and online modalities ensuring alignment with CAHIIM professional curriculum content standards and quality.
- Lead CAHIIM accreditation for the HIM baccalaureate program including assessment plan design and implementation evidence collection self-study authorship site-visit preparation and ongoing compliance/continuous improvement.
- Design implement evaluate and regularly update the HIM curriculum and course schedules to support student progression and timely graduation.
- Develop and maintain transfer pathways and articulation agreements (e.g. UH Community Colleges / Leeward CC HIT to UHWO HIM 22) including advising guides and accurate catalog/website language.
- Convene and facilitate the Program Advisory Board; integrate stakeholder/employer feedback into program improvements.
- Establish evaluate and expand practicum partnerships. Coordinate preceptor agreements student placements and site expectations.
- Recruit hire onboard supervise and mentor lecturers supporting quality instruction assessment and pedagogy.
- Assist in the interpretation modification and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with university and program requirements.
- Plan and secure program resources (budget space technology/software lab/learning resources) to achieve program goals.
- Develop and implement marketing and recruitment plans and materials in collaboration with campus partners.
- Participate in curriculum development including creation of course materials and innovative instructional methods.
- Conduct scholarly and/or applied research related to teaching and the HIM profession; maintain professional currency and credentials.
- Advise and mentor students. Support retention progression graduation and career placement.
- Engage with professional and community health organizations to strengthen practicum sites employer relationships and employment pipelines.
- Serve on program division and university committees; contribute to assessment cycles and accreditation reporting (continuous improvement).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Teaching load & release time if appointed Program Director (CAHIIM-aligned)
While serving as Program Director the faculty member will receive documented release time each term for accreditation administration (assessment/metrics APAR/self-study site-visit preparation PPE oversight advisory board) and summer administrative support (12 months) to ensure continuity of operations; teaching loads will be adjusted accordingly and documented annually.
Minimum Qualifications:
Assistant Professor (F-3)
- Doctoral degree in Health Information Management or a closely related field or equivalent credentials that meet accreditation requirements.
- RHIA credential in good standing (no exceptions) and commitment to maintaining professional currency (AHIMA CEUs).
- Evidence of teaching excellence/effectiveness in Health Information Management (traditional hybrid and online).
- Relevant professional experience in Health Information Management practice and/or leadership.
- Evidence of scholarly and/or applied research related to teaching and/or the HIM profession (or clear potential for such).
- Demonstrated ability to develop instruct and coordinate HIM courses aligned to professional competencies (CAHIIM).
- Excellent communication planning and organizational skills; evidence of independence enthusiasm and self-direction.
- Demonstrated commitment to community representation and belonging including experience teaching and/or working in a multicultural environment and with various Indigenous communities (e.g. Native Hawaiian).
Associate Professor (F-4)
- In addition to minimum qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor (F-3) record of at least five (5) years of full-time college/university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) with documented effectiveness and progressively responsible service/leadership.
- Sustained scholarly productivity including peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent scholarly/creative activity) in the academic/professional field.
- Evidence of program leadership (e.g. curriculum coordination assessment accreditation participation) mentoring and professional/community development.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Additional AHIMA credentials beyond RHIA (e.g. CCS CHDA CDIP CHPS CPHI).
- CAHIIM experience: accreditation self-study/APAR site-visit preparation curriculum mapping to CAHIIM competencies and/or PPE oversight.
- Experience with community-college transfer and articulation especially Leeward CC HIT to UHWO HIM 22 (pathway maps advising guides catalog/website accuracy).
- Demonstrated excellence in online/distance education and course design (use of LMS quality frameworks alignment to outcomes).
- Experience in course/program assessment and institutional/programmatic accreditation.
- Engagement with professional and community health organizations (advisory boards employer partnerships PPE/practicum site development).
- Evidence of external grant activity (PI/co-PI funded projects or strong potential).
- Ability to teach with cultural groundingintegrating Native Hawaiian and other Indigenous perspectives and addressing Hawaiis healthcare needs.
- Eligibility and readiness to serve as Program Director including prior experience with CAHIIM self-study/APAR site-visit preparation curriculum mapping advisory board facilitation and practicum coordination.
