Support the DuPage Forest Preserve as a Seasonal Entomology Preprofessional by completing monitoring and research efforts related to mosquito surveillance and management. This position provides hands-on field and laboratory experience assisting with ecological studies that protect public health information to the community. This position is ideal for anyone with emerging professionals interested in entomology ecology or environmental science.
What Youll Do
- Conduct field sampling and identification of invertebrates such as mosquitoes spongy moths rusty patched bumble bees and ticks.
- Maintain and operate field equipment including insect traps and monitoring tools.
- Test mosquito samples for viruses and support management efforts using established scientific protocols.
- Collect and record GPS data to support project mapping and reporting.
- Operate a 4-wheel drive truck and other vehicles to access field sites.
- Assist with wildlife surveys native seed collection restoration activities and lab work as needed.
- Manage invasive plant species using herbicides and gas-powered equipment.
- Follow safety procedures and support a clean organized and hazard-free work environment.
- Contribute to a collaborative team culture and provide excellent service to internal and external partners.
- Perform other related duties to support ecological projects.
What Youll Need
- 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
- Valid Drivers License in good standing.
- Pursuing or recently completed a degree in entomology ecology wildlife management or a related field.
- Must be able to obtain an IL Department of Agriculture Pesticide Operators license within 1 month of employment.
- Experience working with insects or other wildlife preferred.
- Basic knowledge of insect taxonomy and identification field research methods and data collection techniques.
- Comfortable working independantly on and off trail in wilderness and remote areas.
Schedule & Pay
- Monday-Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
- This position starts around May 11th and lasts until around October of 2026.
- $15 - 16 /hour.
Work Setting
- This position reports to District Headquarters in Wheaton IL and includes daily travel in a District vehicle to forest preserves throughout DuPage County.
- Uniform shirts hats and PPE will be provided. Safety boot allowance available. Hiring for this position begins after January 1 2026.
