Job Summary
The Outpatient Registered Dietitian is an expert in using food and nutrition to promote health and manage disease in an outpatient setting. This role involves providing specialized medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and counseling to a diverse patient population to help them achieve optimal health outcomes and build sustainable healthy habits. The dietitian collaborates with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure comprehensive patient-centered care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments including reviewing medical histories lab values dietary habits and lifestyle factors.
  • Develop implement and monitor individualized nutrition care plans and goals tailored to patient-specific medical conditions (e.g. diabetes cardiovascular disease renal disease cancer weight management gastrointestinal disorders) and cultural preferences.
  • Provide one-on-one nutrition counseling and education to patients and their families translating complex nutritional science into practical understandable guidance.
  • Evaluate and monitor patient progress adjusting care plans as needed based on lab results feedback and observed outcomes.
  • Document patient interactions assessments and progress accurately and confidentially in the electronic health record (EHR) system in accordance with HIPAA and facility standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians nurses social workers and other healthcare team members to coordinate and optimize patient care.
  • May conduct group nutrition and wellness workshops or classes for specific conditions or general health promotion.
  • Stay current with the latest nutritional science research evidence-based practices and regulatory changes through ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in departmental and organizational performance improvement (PI) activities and community outreach initiatives as required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:Minimum of a Masters degree in Dietetics Foods and Nutrition or a related field from an ACEND-accredited program.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Current Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) certification with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
    • Current state licensure.
    • CPR certification may be required.
    • Specialty certification (e.g. CDE - Certified Diabetes Educator CSO - Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition) is a plus.
  • Experience: Previous experience as an outpatient or clinical dietitian is desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication (verbal and written) listening and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to interpret complex data and develop practical solutions.
    • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and nutrition analysis software.
    • Compassion empathy and patience when working with patients facing challenging dietary changes.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing multiple patients and documentation requirements.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
