Job Summary

The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) reports to the Chief Returning Officer as part of the Elections team ( The DRO works to improve the quality and effectiveness of the Students Union elections. This is achieved through providing neutral administrative support to the Elections Office. The DRO may also take on extra responsibilities from the Chief Returning Officer as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the CRO create an advertising strategy for candidate recruitment and voting.
Liaise with the UASU Marketing department to create visual advertising materials for the elections.
Ensure that all candidates conduct is fair and equitable during the campaign period.
Assist with organizing the forums election meetings and hosting the results announcement party.
Update the Elections website with information on Elections dates nomination package availability candidate lists forum dates where/when to vote and voting results.
Assist with the organization of the elections office and clean up after campaigning has finished.
Assist the CRO with other tasks as needed including but not limited to counting candidates campaign materials verifying nominations and moderating forums.

Qualifications

Must be a University of Alberta undergraduate student registered in a minimum of one course for credit in the Winter term in the 2025-26 academic year and paid Students Union fees in full.
Excellent communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
Strong project management organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience using MS Office Excel and internet-based applications including social media.
Willingness and ability to work varying hours and a commitment to working posted office hours acceptable to the Chief Returning Officer.
Experience with the Students Union is an asset but is not required.
Must not concurrently hold any position on the Students Council its boards and committees Student Representative Associations Dedicated Fee Units the D.I.E. Board or term employees/permanent staff of the Students Union.
Must have the ability to be impartial and neutral.

Term

This is a term position running from December 1 2025 to March 31 2026.
Wage: $17.00/hour
Hours: 5-7 hours per week (hours may vary)
The hiring team is seeking to hire up to two DROs.
