Job Summary

Shallow water wave propagation and interactions between waves and structures are crucial for wave disturbance studies in harbours estimation of run-up levels at beaches characterisation of the marine flooding hazard and many other applications of coastal engineering.

Non-linear shallow water propagation models are therefore required; one example is the SWASH code which is developed by the University of Delft and has been used by ARTELIA Maritime for several years. However such models are complex and further work is needed to understand their full potential including improving boundary conditions coupling with nearshore models nesting models with progressively finer resolution adjusting the number of vertical layers analysing output parameters and visualising results.

An internship is therefore available to improve the use of SWASH in the teams studies and to develop new wave analysis tools in the surf zone. It will be supervised by a dedicated supervisor but several other specialists will be consulted depending on their areas of expertise. Good communication skills and a proactive attitude are essential for the successful completion of this internship.

Day-to-day internship

The first step will be to familiarize yourself with the SWASH code and how it is used and applied within the team. This will be complemented by a literature review of case studies relevant to ARTELIAs coastal engineering studies. Improvements to the implementation of models will be identified and applied to test cases from recent engineering studies. You will also develop practical tools for analysing waves and flow in nearshore areas on beaches and behind coastal structures.
