Job Description
Gilead Sciences (Foster City CA) is seeking a talented and highly motivated Translational Scientist to join our Inflammation group and contribute to translational research in fibrotic and inflammation diseases such as IPF IBD RA and NASH. Our collaborative and interdisciplinary research team utilizes state-of-the-art technologies and innovative methodologies to advance medicines into the clinic. The successful candidate is expected to be lab-based and to contribute to the discovery research development and implantation of novel biomarkers to support clinical advancement of therapeutic agents in the disease areas.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Design and execute humanrelevant experiments in primary blood/tissue (gut liver skin lung synovium); perform responder vs nonresponder comparisons perturbation studies and pathway/target validation.
Highdimensional profiling: plan/execute highparameter flow or mass cytometry (18color) receptor occupancy and phosphoflow; singlecell (scRNAseq/ATAC) and spatial transcriptomics/proteomics; multiplex IF/IHC and quantitative pathology.
Endotype & biomarker strategy: define diseaseagnostic PD/RO and endotype markers; qualify/validate fitforpurpose assays (ELISA/MSD qPCR/ddPCR ligandbinding RO/TE) and transfer to internal labs/CROs under GCLP.
Sample strategy & operations: contribute to protocol/IB biomarker sections; specify preanalytical handling chainofcustody and kitting; support CRO selection/oversight; ensure data integrity and timely delivery.
Data integration & interpretation: partner with Biostats and Bioinformatics teams on analysis plans; integrate multiomic/imaging and clinical data; craft succinct go/nogo narratives for governance.
Influence without authority: coordinate across functions; document SOPs; contribute to safety/quality culture; mentor peers and have a growth mindset.
Lead reverse translation workstreams: interrogate clinical/realworld datasets with Clinical Biostats and Bioinformatics; generate mechanistic hypotheses for response/nonresponse.
Gilead Sciences is a world leader in antiviral research having developed small molecule compounds that have revolutionized the treatment of HIV HCV and HBV. Over the last 5 years Gilead has significantly broadened its scope to encompass unmet medical needs in inflammatory and chronic fibrotic diseases.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree and at least 3 years of relevant post-graduate independent research or drug development experience in immunology fibrotic and autoimmune diseases. Experience and knowledge in human fibrotic and inflammatory diseases immunology research is preferred. The candidate must demonstrate top expertise in previous research areas critical analytical skills experimental design and execution and ability to lead independent hypothesis-driven biological research as exemplified by high quality publications. Strong communication skills required. Working knowledge of R/Python/SQL for assay QC and data review is preferred.
Specific Education & Experience Requirements:
PhD or equivalent degree and at least 3 years of relevant post-graduate independent research or drug development experience in immunology fibrotic and autoimmune diseases OR 11 years of experience with BS degree in related scientific discipline OR 9 years of experience with MS degree in related scientific discipline.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
Works independently and determines methods and techniques on new or difficult assignments.
May design new experiments to support development of drug substances and drug products or techniques to test such substances.
Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires comprehensive evaluation of many factors.
Maintains high level of expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and applies appropriately to projects.
