We are looking for a motivated ESL Instructor to join our Hospital Employees Union (HEU) Language Training project team! Not sure if youre 100% qualified We encourage you to apply anyway!


DEPARTMENT: Employment Language and Social Enterprise


POSITION FUNCTION:

  • Delivery and facilitation of Advanced level (CLB 7-8) ESL class to Health Employee Union (HEU) members. The class is hybrid with 3 components:
    • 1. asynchronous online learning on Moodle LMS
    • 2. an in-person class one day per week on Saturdays from 9:30-11:30am
    • 3. office hours - short 1 on 1 meetings with clients via Zoom
  • Meet the specific needs of HEU members by conducting needs assessment and goal setting and responding to those needs
  • Assess and provide feedback to students using Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) indicators and best practices of Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
  • Create a warm inclusive and supportive learning environment both online and in-person.



HEU ESL Instructor Work Schedule


The 17.5 hours per week would have the following expectations:

  • Asynchronous online component 10 hours
    • Duties: sending teacher messages emails feedback
  • In-person class 3 hours
    • Duties: prep facilitation of a 2-hour class held at the MOSAIC Vancouver Language Center at 2730 Commercial Drive Vancouver
  • Office Hours 2 hours
    • Duties: make schedule with 15-minute time slots meet with students to address individual needs
  • Prep Admin 2.5 hours
    • Duties: Weekly meeting marking attendance changes to curriculum


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent pedagogical knowledge and experience in online instruction using Moodle and Zoom
  • Recognized undergraduate degree and a TESL Canada recognized TESL certificate or a clearly documented equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of experience teaching adult ESL particularly using student-centered participatory methods. Community-based settlement and Literacy ESL experience an asset.
  • Working knowledge of the CLBs (Canadian Language Benchmarks) and PBLA (Portfolio Based Language Assessment).


    COMPENSATION: $31.26 - $34.56 per hour


    HOURS: Part-time 17.5 hours per week

    Fixed term (January 2 2026 - April 23 2027 Tues- Sat 3.5hrs/day)

    BENEFITS: A competitive benefits package is provided with contracts of at least 1 year in length and which offer a minimum of 17.5 hours of work per week.
