At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design Department of Sustainability and Planning a position as Associate Professor in GNSS Remote Sensing and Artificial Intelligence is open for appointments with start October 2026 or soon thereafter. The position will be based a part of the Geodesy Group within Copenhagen campus of Aalborg University.

The department was established in 1975. Today we are located in two beautiful harbour-front locations in both Aalborg and Copenhagen. We have more than 250 employees and approximately 1200 students across the two cities.

Our research and study programmes are rooted in sustainability and the green transition. This means we conduct research in areas such as the circular economy technology urban energy and environmental planning as well as sustainable transition and design. Sustainability is central to our work in environmental assessment and marine surveying and land use sustainability is reflected in our efforts in nature restoration and climate adaptation.

As society continues to develop digitally we also focus on responsible technology development addressing real-life challenges. Our problem-oriented approach and close collaboration with businesses and public organisations form the foundation of all our study programmes. Job description
The position is allocated in the Geodesy research group which covers a broad range of geodetic topics like satellite geodetic and Earth observation (EO) data assimilation precise GNSS positioning and surveying technology.

Research Profile
We are looking for a candidate who can extend and complement the research profile of the group with the main research emphasis on:

  • GNSS remote sensing and reflectometry (GNSS-R) with a focus on land surface processes such as soil moisture dynamics and biomass estimation; and
  • AI-based environmental modeling especially for monitoring modelling and forecasting Earth surface processes.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Has demonstrated research leadership in topics related to GNSS-R data and integrating it with other remote sensing platforms (e.g. Sentinel MODIS SMAP satellite gravity)
  • Can lead research projects to combine remote sensing data with Earth system models for multi-source analysis
  • Has a strong background in Artificial Intelligence including machine learning deep learning or hybrid modeling approaches
  • Has a research profile that includes geospatial applications and large-scale data integration and analysis.
  • Has shown successful track-record in securing third party research funds.

Teaching Responsibilities
As an Associate Professor you will contribute to teaching and supervision in the Geodesy group. This includes:

  • Lecturing on topics such as geodetic positioning surveying engineering and remote sensing
  • Leading practical exercises using tools like total stations levelling instruments GNSS equipment lidar and laser scanners
  • Supervising BSc and MSc projects
  • Coordinating and planning courses and semesters at both bachelor and master levels primarily within surveying and geodesy.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of employment as an assistant professor but may also be obtained in other ways.

It is a precondition that applicants have documented research at an international addition applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.
