Job Summary

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or two-year vocational training.

  • Two years of related experience.

  • Other equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of law enforcement equipment operational procedures and communication methods.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the various aspects of the communications field including electronic engineering and design radio communication electronic troubleshooting repair and maintenance. Knowledge of radio wave and coverage theory intermodulation interference radio and audio frequency noise interference and antenna systems.

  • Skilled in the use of electronic diagnostic equipment basic hand tools and operation of various vehicles in all types of weather conditions.

  • Ability to analyze technical problems and develop solutions; read and understand schematic diagrams technical manuals and specifications; bend kneel and crouch in confined workspaces.

Division Overview:

The mission of the Montana Highway Patrol is to focus on safeguarding the lives property and constitutional rights of people traveling the ways of our State. We support the mission of the Montana Department of Justice by providing courteous professional compassionate and responsive services in the areas of community education enforcement investigations support services interagency collaboration and community involvement. We are committed to maintaining the publics trust being technologically advanced and efficiently using the resources entrusted to us.

The Radio Maintenance Section performs all vehicle upfitting radio maintenance and installation and repair of all police equipment in patrol vehicles. This section also maintains the Highway Patrol communication system including communication infrastructure. Radio Maintenance Section also maintains Highway Patrol telecommunications equipment and radio control circuits data transmission equipment cellular communications and performs related maintenance.

Job Overview:

The Electronic Repair Technologist is responsible for the installation troubleshooting repair and maintenance of communications equipment. This position performs a wide variety of advanced technical assignments related to the installation maintenance and repair of two-way radios and other communications and electronic test equipment.

Duties include analyzing troubleshooting repairing and maintaining a variety of hand-held mobile fixed-base and mobile relay communications equipment developing and implementing equipment installations strategies for statewide communications network and providing technical assistance and direction in the use of communications equipment. Electronic Repair Techs provide reports complete requests for service determine appropriate methodology for installing communications equipment circuit tests switches test trunks and installation.

This is a modified position legislatively funded through the legislature every two years
