Job Summary

Position Summary

The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for an energetic and self-motivated individualto provide the public with a safe and well-maintained facility at the Zanewood Recreation Center. This position will provide general maintenance custodial equipment facility ground maintenance services and customer service to the public and internal staff.

This individual must be able to work in an extremely fast paced work environment with a desire to work in a highly diverse recreation center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General maintenance cleaning and other related janitorial duties;

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks including floor maintenance and sanitation duties including but not limited to cleaning restrooms and locker rooms sweeping and mopping floors vacuuming window washing disinfecting surfaces trash pick-up and removal.
  • Perform snow and ice control operations with primary responsibility to shovel sidewalks.
  • Set up and take down of meeting rooms module office equipment and furniture.
  • Perform light building repairs on flooring doors lighting and painting.
  • Perform general landscaping maintenance: weeding watering and pruning.

Operate and perform preventative maintenance and repair on equipment buildings and grounds;
  • Maintain organized inventory and maintenance records.
  • Conduct daily or weekly inspections of building and grounds to identify potential issues and ensure all systems are functioning properly.
  • Follow annual maintenance schedule daily and repair equipment as needed.

Provide customer service to the public and internal staff.
  • Assist with customer service requests.
  • Answer general questions.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
Prior experience in general building and equipment maintenance.

Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and basic skills in minor repairs of equipment and buildings.
  • Knowledge and ability to repair and operatesmall equipment/machinery.
  • Knowledge ofstandard procedures andsafety protocols.
  • Ability to read understand and follow oral and written instructions such as plans safety instructions manuals.
  • Ability to communicate clearly concisely and effectively both in verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to problem solve to fix minor maintenance challenges.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public courteously and tactfully.
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets or exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction.

  • Proven ability and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive workplace related to racial equity diversity and inclusion.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Graduation from a vocational program or technical training in building maintenance.
  • General maintenance experience in a recreation or school setting.
  • Previous light maintenance and/or custodial maintenance experience.
  • Skilled in carpentry electrical plumbing and/or HVAC.
  • Previous experience with skid loaders lawnmowers snow brooms1-tonsnowplowtrucksfloorscrubberspressurewashers and/or ice resurfacers.
  • Previous experience in ground maintenance and snow/ice removal.
  • Previous training/experience in customer service methods or practices.
  • Experience working with people from various cultural socioeconomic racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Fluency in Spanish Hmong Russian Somali Lao or Vietnamese language(s).

  • Core business hours are set by departments based on operational needs. Alternative schedules can be arranged but must comply with the Citys Alternative Work Arrangement policy.
  • Full-time non-exempt non-union position to work 6AM-2:30PM in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 10 to 50 pounds regularly/occasionally.
  • Prolonged periods of standing bending sitting stooping kneeling climbing.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals possibly hazardous.
  • Work is performed in various conditions indoors temperature controlled 40-50 degrees and outdoor in various weather conditions.

The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check are necessary for this job title. Drug & Alcohol Testing/Medical Examination
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test/medical examination once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
