Who we are

Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time overseeing and evolving Ontarios electricity market engaging with government municipalities and Indigenous communities and planning for Ontarios future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation protecting the system from threats advancing the provinces energy conservation programs and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources well need in the decades to come.

  • The IESOs Enabling Resources Program (ERP). The ERP is a set of projects that will enable key emerging resources specifically electricity storage hybrid generation-storage pairings (hybrids) and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the IESO-administered markets. The aim of ERP is to allow these resources to more effectively provide required system services and contribute to the safe and reliable operation of the bulk power system in Ontario.
  • In this role you will contribute towards developing and implementing a new pathway for DERs to access the IESO-administered markets.
  • This position is represented by the Society of United Professionals.

  • Support the development and implementation of a new participation model for DER aggregations to access the IESO-Administered Market
  • Interact with a diverse range of internal stakeholders across the IESO external stakeholders distribution utilities government and regulatory bodies.

What youll do


In this role youll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

  • Lead or support work to determine design decisions and draft design documents
  • Develop and implement work plans to achieve a defined objective working closely with business analysis and subject matter experts across the organization
  • Spearhead cross-functional teams of subject matter experts to deliver on time and budget
  • Work with the IESOs Project Management team to progress design work identify and mitigate risks work with audit and other enterprise change functions

In a typical day you will

  • You will work with subject matter experts and consultants to develop market design for the DER Integration stream. This includes using your critical thinking skills and technical background to explore design concepts making design decisions writing design documents supporting business requirements documentation.
  • Support design you will collaborate with external stakeholders including distribution utilities aggregators associations government and regulatory bodies.
  • Make risk-informed decisions to advance your work. You will work with IT and external vendors to update tools and solutions in accordance with market design and support solution testing and other execution phase activities.

Right now/recently this position builds on the recently implemented foundation of the Market Renewal Project where a major revamp was achieved to support electricity market best practices. The Advisor will create further enhancements to the market for emerging resources and puts you at the forefront to ensuring these resources are being utilized in an effective and efficient manner.

To succeed in this role youll need:

Education:

  • Requires academic training in business commerce engineering math economics or other applicable field of study at a level to understand and apply the technical/economical legislative parameters governing the energy industry and market place.
  • Requires critical thinking analytical and organization skills high analytical and reasoning skills and excellent communication skills to develop strategies communicate and effectively interface with all contacts involved in accomplishing the work objectives.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4 year university degree or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Requires the ability to applying testing and considering the merits of alternatives in order to effectively deliver on work streams and projects.
  • Requires intermediate knowledge and understanding of the design and operation of the IESO-administered markets or other electricity markets and a broad understanding of the electricity industry in general particularly as it relates to the utility sector landscape in Ontario and the bulk system integration of DER aggregations (DER/As).
  • Requires a strong understanding of or background in the utility sector to become familiar with the inherent factors opportunities and barriers influencing DER/As in the energy industry including: utility grid modernization; metering and data measurement & verification of DER/As; service stacking of DER/As; and bi-directional Transmission-Distribution coordination.
  • Requires project management skills to effectively complete work objectives/projects on time and within budget.
  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
