As a member of the Emergency Response and Planning Team you will work at the heart of the electricity sector. You will play a critical role in making sure NESO are well prepared for any incidents that could affect us ensuring that our people are trained competent and ready to respond to and keep the lights on and Britain moving day after day.

Your role will be to assess the level of preparedness across the organisation for our most severe risks. This will mean working with our digital & technology teams security and facilities to understand the systems and equipment we rely on and their current level of resilience. You will be asked to assimilate the information you obtain and create recommendations for increasing our organisational resilience.

This is a challenging but fascinating role with opportunities for engaging with teams across NESO and external stakeholders.

This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants as well as flexible working arrangements.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024 the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO) the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britains electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

The ESO including all of its existing roles are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO we will build on our existing roles capabilities and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors including electricity natural gas and hydrogen and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors with complete operational independence from government the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable affordable and secure way for all.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assess our level of readiness across the organisation for our most severe risks. This will need you to always have internal and external stakeholders at the forefront of your thought process.
  • Accurately assimilate and analyse the information you have obtained draw appropriate conclusions and develop recommendations for improvements across our people processes and technology.
  • Constantly scanning of global developments that could negatively affect NESO and the wider energy sector
  • Being aware of innovation and developments across resilience business continuity and emergency preparedness and response that NESO can adopt
  • Collaboration building and forging strong relationships internally and externally is key in NESO succeeding and delivering on its commitments
  • Our operation is 24/7 so being flexible agile and available out of hours weekends and holidays in times of need is essential
  • Develop and design training and exercising material for use in training and exercising our response teams
  • Help manage and monitor on call rosters and always be on the lookout for capable people to join the response teams
  • Ensure our plans processes tools and response facilities are ready and primed to respond to any eventuality

  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal Essential
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to challenge others in an appropriate manner Essential
  • Can quickly develop good and working relationships with others and be seen as a trusted source Essential
  • Has current SC clearance or a willingness to undergo SC clearance - Essential
  • Understanding of JESIP principles and those of emergency planning preparedness and response Essential
  • Understanding of the electricity or gas sector is preferred - Desired

What youll get

A competitive salary between 50000 - 67000pa dependent on experience and capability.

As well as your base salary you will receive a bonus based on company performance 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
