Position Overview:

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice is looking for a highly energetic candidate who is self-motivated and has the working knowledge of the principles practices and techniques for operations of high-pressure coal gas or oil-fired boilers and how to regulate them. The incumbent in this position will also be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the powerhouse equipment. The incumbent will also assist in emergency repairs. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to manage several functions and/or assigned tasks in the Engineering Department at IYC St. Charles/PEACE Center. This position would be an excellent fit for someone with a passion and a strong background in maintenance. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply!

Essential Functions:

  • Operates and maintains powerhouse equipment such as boilers feed pumps tower pumps wells water softeners air compressors switchgear water heaters and the emergency generator.
  • Test facility domestic water supply boiler water cooling tower chiller de-alkalizer and heating system.
  • Maintains daily power plant reports.
  • Assist in emergency repairs cited by management.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of High School.
  • Requires four years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):

  • Requires working knowledge of the principles practices and techniques used in the operation of high-pressure coal gas or oiled fired boilers and their auxiliaries.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of the operation of electrical generating equipment.
  • Prefers possession of a Stationary Engineers License.
  • Prefers possession of an EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) 608 CFC Universal Refrigeration License.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee regardless of position held is prohibited.
  • This position is considered very heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(e)). Very Heavy work involves lifting objects weighing more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

About the Agency:

The mission of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is to build youth skills and strengthen families by promoting community safety and positive youth outcomes. Over 900 staff members from across various departmentssecurity programming education mental health and morecollaborate with the understanding that youth are physically emotionally and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency engages families and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois communities.

Work Hours: Shifts will be variable based on season. Shifts are bid by Seniority so shifts and days off change.
