Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Vice President or designee and the direct supervision of the Director of Clinical Operations with oversight of the Medical Director this position functions as a Registered Nurse (RN). The Registered Nurse (RN) primary responsibility is to conduct initial nursing triage assessments for walk-in telehealth urgent and scheduled visits to determine acuity and appropriate level of care provide responsive sound and accurate medical triage and assessment of patients. Provides patient education counseling and anticipatory guidance for common conditions treatment plans and self-care. Coordinates referrals to medical providers mental health professionals or external specialists as appropriate. Administers and interprets screening tools (e.g. depression anxiety substance use suicide risk) and initiates crisis intervention protocols when needed. Collaborates with Counseling Services to identify students in distress and ensures safe handoff to mental health providers. Participates in crisis intervention including suicide prevention risk assessment and stabilization. Provides ongoing case management support for students with complex medical and mental health needs. Educates students on available mental health and wellness resources including campus and community supports. Assists providers with procedures examinations and treatment plans for acute and chronic conditions. Provides wound care medication administration (oral IM SQ IV) nebulizer therapy and splinting/orthopedic support. Administers vaccines (HPV meningococcal Tdap influenza COVID-19 etc.) per CDC and state guidelines. Reviews and validates immunization records ensuring compliance with university and public health requirements. Maintains cold chain integrity for vaccine storage monitoring refrigerator/freezer logs daily. Additional responsibilities include providing clinical leadership and oversight for MAs in patient flow infection control and supply management. Ensures MAs are following protocols for vital signs rooming specimen collection and PPE use. Assists with and oversees stocking and inventory management of supplies vaccines and medications and clinical supplies. Provides training feedback and guidance to support MA professional development. include the ability to provide leadership clinical direction and mentoring of Medical Assistants (MA) and Clinical Assisting (CA) staff; perform nursing procedures common to Ambulatory and Urgent Care as directed by medical providers; clinical protocols not limited to medication administration and medication counts IV insertion audiometry spirometry and CLIA Waived testing. Knowledge of professional nursing principles methods and procedures. Thorough knowledge of medical terminology and clinical equipment use.

Adhere to compliance with all regulatory agencies and university standards including but are not limited to: HIPPA FERPA CDC (Centers for Disease Control) OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) Maintains current knowledge of Board of Nursing scope of practice HIPAA OSHA and infection control requirements. Participates in quality improvement initiatives staff trainings and emergency preparedness drills. Monitors and documents-controlled substance handling and sharps disposal. ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) QA (Quality Assurance) QI (Quality Improvement) and benchmarking activities.

Must also possess the ability to communicate with internal and external customers and provide exceptional customer service. Maintains and supports service-oriented relationships with all customers not limited to clinic staff campus community vendors and the community. Anticipated Hiring Range:$7626.00 (Step 10) - $8419.00 (Step 15) per month

CSU Classification Salary Range:$6381 (Step 1) - $9296.00 (Step 20) per month

Salary step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience.

Knowledge:

In addition to those of the Registered Nurse I possess broader and specialized nursing knowledge that supports the performance of specialized duties in such areas as but not limited to triage and assessment patient counseling and staffing specialized nursing clinics; broader knowledge of clinic operations and the development and implementation of a nursing program including procedures and protocols.

Abilities:

In addition to those of the Registered Nurse I ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills.

Education and Experience:

In addition to those of the Registered Nurse I one year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

License and Certifications:

Possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California and certification in CPR/AED.

  1. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support (ACLS)
  2. Current valid California license as a Registered Nurse.

Experience

  1. Experience in administering and interpreting Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived laboratory tests under nursing protocols including but not limited to: Urinalysis pregnancy testing rapid strep mono spot hematocrit etc.
  2. Experience in assessing patients in urgent care and primary care.
  3. Experience working with an Electronic Health Records System (EHR).
  4. Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Knowledge Skills Abilities

  1. Knowledge and ability to interpret ambulatory care setting standards for AAAHC accreditation requirements.
  2. Ability to deliver exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  3. Ability to apply good judgment decision-making and problem solving
  4. Knowledge in assessing patient needs in an urgent care/psychiatric care environment.
  5. Knowledge of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Privacy Rules and California state laws regulating privacy and confidentiality of health information
  6. Ability to use standard office and medical equipment and software programs (i.e. Microsoft Office)
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  8. Thorough knowledge of uses and effects of medications including emergency ACLS medications narcotics and IV medications
  9. Knowledge of medical triage and assessment of patients.
  10. Knowledge of and commitment to preventative health care.
