Description

The City of Oxnards Public Works Department is seeking a Custodianwho is highly motivated takes initiative and has excellent oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have previous custodial experience the ability to work independently; and as a team member have a positive attitude excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

WHAT YOULL DO:

  • Sweep vacuum mop strip seal wax and buff floors

  • Operate a variety of cleaning equipment (e.g. carpet extractors slow and high speed buffers)

  • Clean scrub and disinfect restrooms showers and related areas including toilets urinals sinks and other bathroom fixtures

  • Maintain security of buildings by locking/unlocking doors windows gates and setting alarms; raise/lower the flag as assigned

  • Polish and clean furniture wash walls and windows clean stairwells elevators breakrooms conference rooms empty trash and recycle dust

  • Demonstrate a full understanding of policies procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties

  • Maintain logs supply lists and report any maintenance issues in a timely manner

  • Routine coverage of city buildings when needed


PAYROLL/CLASSIFICATION TITLE:

Maintenance Technician

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker in that it provides semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance work.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives close supervision and specific direction regarding assignments and deadlines.

WORK SCHEDULE:

The work week for this recruitment is generally Monday through Friday 4:00 p.m.- 12:30 a.m. Depending on the work assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work addition this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.

Essential Functions

(This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.)

  • Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance and operations work in support of City departments or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools supplies and equipment for assignment; performs work following established safety policies and procedures.

  • Operates and maintains assigned equipment tools and supplies; performs basic inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; cleans and performs preventative maintenance; and monitors need for replacement or advanced repair/maintenance work.

  • Plans monitors and reviews inventory and supply needs; places orders or requests based on requirements.

  • Maintains activity logs records work orders and related reports.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:

Positions assigned to custodian services may be responsible for:

  • Emptying trash and recycle containers;

  • Cleaning and sanitation of restrooms;

  • Polishing and maintenance of fixtures and furniture;

  • Stripping/waxing floors;

  • Shampooing carpet;

  • Attending to unplanned spills and clean-up tasks;

  • Opening and securing buildings;

  • Setting up and taking down flags;

  • Maintaining logs and reporting maintenance issues.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for the entry into the classification:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years of custodial experience

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

Depending on assignment some positions may require:

  • Valid California Class C Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing

UNION MEMBERSHIP: Positions in this classification are represented by theInternational Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).


NOTE:For most positions the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance effective communication skills and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Employees are required to participate in the Citys direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12 month probationary period.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100 all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
