General Responsibilities

This position is responsible for performing a variety of skilled journey level work in the repair modification maintenance and installation of new and existing plumbing systems (water/sewer/steam/gas); including pipefitting and is performed under the general supervision of designated shop supervisor or other administrative personnel. This position serves astheworking leader of a crew of Plumber/Pipefitters engaged in performing a variety of skilled tasks andmay provide written or oral information to a superior regarding the performance of subordinates assigned to a crew shop or team but is not assigned formal responsibility for performance evaluation.

Many maintenance tasks are performed at schools centers and offices while others are performed in a shop or fixed site. Work is usually carried out within the framework of well-defined procedures but some independent judgement is exercised to complete assigned tasks. Work is checked through personal inspection by a superior or approval of an administrator at the work site. Some positions assigned to this classification may be required to work an evening shift on a regular or rotating basis.

Education and Experience

Completion of high school including or supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship plumbing and pipefitting training and considerable progressively more responsible experience in the appropriate trades some of which will have been at the masters level or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge skill and ability.

Requires a Journey Plumber License DPOR Va. Journeyman Gas Fitter License Va. Backflow Prevention Tester License (City). 2 PSI Natural Gas Certificate. Requires a valid drivers license.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversees and participates in the work of a small group of employees engaged in determining defects repairing installing and maintaining piping and drainage systems for water sewer steam or natural gas.
  • Responsibility for troubleshooting testing repairing maintaining and modifying commercial plumbing pipefitting and steam-fitting systems and equipment.
  • Cuts and threads pipes to ensure proper connections.
  • Installs repairs and replaces valves (gas relief and thermo) and related controls traps plumbing fixtures holding units etc.
  • Replaces cooling and dual temperature pumps.
  • Responsible for repairing and replacing heaters (up to 80 gallons).
  • Repairs swimming pool and irrigation piping systems; installs tests and repairs cross-connection and backflow control devices.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of hand and power tools such as pipe threaders and cutters electric sewer routers ejector pump machines augers water jet sewer machines gas leak detectors acetylene welding torches backflow testers multimeters temperature sensors and various drills and dies and other plumbing and pipefitting equipment.
  • Requires the ability to perform well under emergency repair.
  • Requires the ability to adapt to constantly changing priority work situations.
  • Responsible for skilled use of tools equipment and materials pertinent to the trade.
  • Ensures safety of the work area.
  • Uses ladders and scaffolding.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the equipment materials methods practices and tools used in the commercial plumbing pipefitting and steam fitting (water/sewer/steam/gas) trade.
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of plumbing systems including design operation maintenance repair and parts variations.
  • Thorough knowledge of related plumbing and pipefitting codes and other federal state and local safety codes; thorough knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Skill in the use of tools equipment and materials pertinent to the trade.
  • Ability to troubleshoot test repair maintain or modify commercial plumbing pipefitting and steam fitting systems and equipment.
  • Ability to plan and perform work of the trade at the full masters level.
  • Ability to observe monitor train assign lead and make recommendations to superior regarding the work of subordinates assigned to a crew.
  • Ability to perform well under emergency repair or changing work priority situations.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions diagrams blueprints and manufacturers manuals.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials needed for jobs and to perform routine record keeping tasks and arithmetical computations.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all essential tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds; stooping bending kneeling and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; working from ladders piping and scaffolding up to 40 feet high; wearing a dust mask wearing rubber gloves.

HAZARDS

Exposure to hazardous or explosive gases strong cleaning solvents scalding liquids dust extreme temperatures malodorous fumes and unsavory sights excessive noise levels moving machinery and asbestos; using power equipment; working from heights; working in wet conditions.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Work is performed both inside and outside of school buildings often from high places or in cramped and uncomfortable positions and may require working during unusual hours.
