Position Overview

The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (L&D RN) is responsible for providing exceptional patient-centered care to expectant mothers and their newborns. The L&D RN supports patients through all stages of labor delivery and immediate postpartum care working closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe and successful childbirth experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Patient Assessment and Care
    • Perform comprehensive assessments of maternal and fetal health during labor delivery and recovery.
    • Monitor vital signs fetal heart rates contractions and other indicators of labor progress.
    • Administer medications including epidurals and induction agents as prescribed.
    • Educate patients and families on labor processes pain management options and postpartum care.
  2. Labor and Delivery Support
    • Assist patients during all stages of labor including natural births assisted deliveries and cesarean sections.
    • Provide emotional and physical support to patients and families during labor and delivery.
    • Operate and monitor medical equipment such as fetal monitors and IV pumps.
    • Anticipate and respond quickly to complications such as preterm labor fetal distress or hemorrhage.
  3. Postpartum and Neonatal Care
    • Provide immediate postpartum care to mothers including monitoring complications such as bleeding or infection.
    • Support and educate patients in breastfeeding and newborn care.
    • Perform initial newborn assessments including Apgar scoring weight and vital signs.
  4. Collaboration and Teamwork
    • Work closely with obstetricians midwives anesthesiologists and pediatricians to coordinate care.
    • Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams and report changes in patient status promptly.
    • Participate in emergency interventions such as neonatal resuscitation or emergency cesarean deliveries.
  5. Documentation and Compliance
    • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in electronic medical systems.
    • Follow hospital policies state regulations and evidence-based practices.
    • Ensure adherence to infection control standards and patient safety protocols.
  6. Professional Development
    • Stay current on labor and delivery best practices through continuing education.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Current RN license in the state of Ohio.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 1 year of experience in labor and delivery or women s health nursing preferred.
    • Strong clinical judgment critical thinking and communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Work in a fast-paced environment with physically and emotionally demanding situations.
  • Frequent standing lifting and assisting patients during labor and delivery.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids infectious diseases and potential emergencies.
