Lab Automation Operator Technical Programming Focus W2 Only
Contract 6 months
Onsite 5 days/week Lansdale PA.
Overview:
The Lab Automation Operator will bridge laboratory operations and software engineering to enhance and maintain automated systems within a regulated bioanalytical environment. This role focuses on developing programming and optimizing automated workflows for high-throughput screening data acquisition and cell-based assays. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with lab robotics and strong programming capabilities to integrate diverse systems troubleshoot complex automation issues and enable next-generation scientific automation.
Education Minimum Requirement:
- Bachelors degree in engineering Computer Science Automated Sciences Biology Chemistry or a related field.
- Advanced programming or system integration experience in a laboratory environment is highly desirable.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Program and integrate automation systems: Develop and maintain scripts and control logic for robotic systems liquid handlers automated incubators and analytical instruments using languages such as Python C# or VB.
- Workflow design and optimization: Translate manual laboratory processes (e.g. assay prep cell culture media exchange) into scalable automated workflows.
- System implementation: Configure test and deploy automation software scheduling platforms (e.g. Cellario) and LIMS integrations.
- Troubleshooting and recovery: Serve as the first line of defense for automation errors communication failures and mechanical issues.
- Data handling and integrity: Build and maintain automated data acquisition pipelines ensuring compliance with GLP and ALCOA principles.
- Validation and documentation: Develop SOPs execute IQ/OQ/PQ testing and document automated workflows for regulatory readiness.
- Collaboration and innovation: Work closely with scientists engineers and IT to implement automation strategies supporting AI- and ML-enabled discovery platforms.
- System calibration and maintenance: Oversee calibration preventive maintenance and lifecycle management of automated assets.
- Training and support: Provide programming and operational training to lab users and junior automation staff.
Required Experience and Skills:
- 2 years of experience operating or programming liquid handling platforms (e.g. Hamilton STARlet Beckman Biomek Tecan Labcyte Brooks) or robotic scheduling systems (e.g. Biosero Green Button Go; Thermo Fisher Momentum).
- Proficiency in Python C# VB or LabVIEW for system automation control logic and data integration.
- Understanding of API communication serial communication and device integration between instruments and informatics systems.
- Experience with SQL databases data parsing and real-time data visualization tools.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to debug software and hardware interfaces in automated workflows.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across scientific and IT domains.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Prior experience in pharmaceutical or biotech laboratories operating under GLP or GxP environments.
- Experience developing or integrating with LIMS ELN or data lakes for laboratory data management.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical assembly sensor integration and automation hardware interfacing.
- Knowledge of cell-based assay automation (e.g. iPSC culture organoid maintenance high-content imaging).
- Exposure to machine learning or AI-based data analysis within automated laboratory settings.
Example Technical Applications:
- Programming automated cell seeding media exchange and cell counting workflows for mammalian cultures.
- Integrating Hamilton STARlet or Beckman Biomek systems with LIMS for automated scheduling and data tracking.
- Developing custom Python scripts for real-time monitoring of instrument performance and predictive maintenance alerts.
- Building automated QC pipelines that validate assay results and trigger workflow adjustments autonomously.
Key Competencies:
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a blend of scientific and technical acumen.
- Ability to translate lab procedures into code and automated workflows.
- Collaborative team player comfortable in cross-functional environments (scientific engineering IT).
