Overview

The Department of Physics at Utah State University invites applications for one (1) full-time (1 FTE) 9-month non-tenure-track renewable Senior Lecturer position located at the Logan Campus. The start date for the position is January 1 2026. This is a teaching-focused appointment (95% teaching 5% service 0% research). Senior Lecturers are expected to maintain a record of exceptional teaching and effective service play a mentorship role in undergraduate research and engage in innovative course development.

Responsibilities

It is anticipated that this position will carry a 4-4 teaching load during the Fall and Spring semesters. The successful candidate will:

  • Deliver physics instruction to classes with enrollments ranging from fewer than 10 to several hundred students.
  • Develop and teach lower-division courses serving physics majors physics service students and students fulfilling Center for Civic Excellence (CIVC) requirements.
  • Provide instruction across multiple delivery methods as appropriate including face-toface online and broadcast formats. o Examples include:
  • Astronomy (PHYS 1040) Calculus-based Physics for Scientists and Engineers (PHYS 2210/2220) Physics for Life Sciences (PHYS 2110/2120)
  • Physics of Technology (PHYS 1800) Elementary Physics (PHYS 1010)
  • Lead innovative course development identifying new horizons where physics content can contribute to interdisciplinary programs.
  • Take ownership of the departments growing Concurrent Enrollment (CE) program serving as both instructor and organizer.
  • Demonstrate effective and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced computational tools to support innovative teaching and course development.
  • Collaborate across colleges (e.g. Arts Engineering) to develop courses that integrate physics into broader disciplinary contexts.
  • Maintain a record of exceptional teaching and effective service.
  • Mentor undergraduate students including research activities.
  • Contribute to the operations and governance of the department college and university through meaningful service activities.

Qualifications

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Physics.
  • Minimum of five years of university-level teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated record of teaching large-enrollment physics courses (e.g. PHYS//) across multiple delivery formats (face-to-face online broadcast).
  • Evidence of exceptional teaching effectiveness supported by strong student evaluations peer classroom reviews with responsiveness to feedback and a sustained record of teaching and service excellence.
  • Proven ability to mentor and advise undergraduates including engagement outside the classroom and leadership in organizing and teaching
  • Concurrent Enrollment courses for high school students.
  • Broad vision for innovative course development and physics content delivery combined with experience collaborating across disciplines.
  • Experience using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced computational tools effectively and responsibly in teaching.
  • Demonstrated impact at the university level across disciplines and across the state through Concurrent Enrollment and/or broadcast instruction.
